Data on personal equipment.

Pretty much logging of information on the performance of your rifle in relation to ammo used, distance shot, weather conditions etc etc. Its a sniper thing.

For us civilians its a fancy way of saying "I have a gun diary"

Its also used a VERB, in which case it means adjusting your shot (or equipment) based on conditions

Data of Previous Engagement

or

Data On Personal Equipment

Heard both being used. Not sure which one is right.

If you go to the CA Precision Rifle Club subforum, there's a sticky thread with all the info you could ever want to know. Sorry I can't link you, I'm on my phone.

Civi's and snipers keep a log of how there rifle and ammo performs at given ranges. Like to that car or that bush or that tree at various ranges they know what there adjustments are without having to guess for the most part. So if a target presents itself they know with a high degree of certainty where the rounds will hit.

Data on Previous Engagement is the term I have always hear.

That's dope as hell.

yes, such as you know the hold over from a previous shot or previous situation with same conditions etc etc..
hence you you are DOPING your shot.

Keeping your log on a PDA or your phone combined with a ballistics calculator on the same is particularly nice.

I have a droid X. can you recommend an app?

shooter3225 04-21-2011 8:29 PM

Ballistics FTE is what i use..best ballistics app i hav found

killshot44 04-21-2011 8:46 PM

Ballistic FTE kicks sand in the other apps faces....I had Bullet Flight from Knights Armament for a while, paid for it and deleted it, that's how much better FTE is (for me at least).

It's the "D" in DOPE that's important. Knowing your scope "come-ups" at every distance you're going to shoot is vital whether you're picking off the enemy or going for X's.

I don't understand the allure of these programs. Isn't it "more fun" to do the math in your head and see if you get it right?

I enjoy counting the dots, figuring the range by estimating the size, then turning the dial to what I think zeros the crosshair.

or am I over thinking what these apps do for you? Do they tell you what to dial in?

I can no longer do this, since I no longer have a scope worthy of this.
