Modesto Rifle Club Vintage match

Drove down to the Modesto Rifle Club yesterday and shot in their Vintage Military Match. Small range but set up really well, just don't shoot over the berms, there are houses and farm animals out there! Great bunch of guys, we had 19 shooters. Mix of Garands, 1903s, 03-A3s, Swiss K-31s, a Swede M96, US Model of 1917 and my Swiss ZFK-55.
Course of fire was two strings of ten at 100 yards and two strings of ten at 200 yards (using NRA reduced targets). 15 minutes per string preceded by a 10 minute sight in period at each distance.
I took 1st in optics class with a 384-9X but since there were only two of us in that class, no pay-out. This was their first match of the year, if anyone in the area is interested you should try them out.
I stuck around after the match and tried out my new Model of 1884 Springfield Trapdoor 45-70. Fun times!

Was this off-hand or of a rest?

Bench. They allowed front and rear rest/pads, I only used the front.

Sounds fun

Did they have an "open" class for modern optics on a vintage rifle, or did the optic equipped rifle have to be a "sniper" model with period optics?

Nope, just four classes. Cass 1 "as issued" Class 2 "modified" (diopters) Class 3 "gas" and Class 4 Optics

Bob, how come you did not tell us about this before the fact? I would have shot the match. However, not sure how I would perform well at 100 yards as I am not use to shooting that long of a distance.

When is the next match? Did you tell them about our match on the 16th.

Real men shot off their hind legs, Juanito only likes the couch potato or dinner table positions.

We shot Chabot 200 meter silhouette today, featured iron sight rifle was 1903 or 03A3, winner shot 11x20 (off hind legs), Match winner shot 16x20 (off hind legs) , I ended up second in A class with 9x20, A class won with 10x20 (off hind legs).

Hey Bob ,did you meet a guy named Warren Briar .Hes the one to talk to about getting a trap door to shoot . Arnie

Arnie,

Yes, he shot. Seemed like a nice guy.

Juanito,

I didn't know about it until Friday night, got invited by a buddy that lives down there. They'll have them every month until around November.

You want me to show up to get my butt whipped?:D I could barely hit the chicken at out range prone. I seriously doubt it if I will ever hit anything at any distance off hand. Last year I shot the Garand match which involves off hand and kneeling. Talk about disaster? However, the most comical is seeing Harry and Bob trying to get up from the kneeling position.

Nice, thanks for being mean to us old guys....

Tom is thinking of changing the format.

Master - shoots everything standing
AAA - shoots chickens, turkeys and rams standing
AA - shoots rams and pigs standing
A - shoots pigs standing
B - shoots nothing standing

Those that always flap their gums about what a lousy shot they are don't get to shoot, only spot.....and they have to do that standing!

How did you do on Saturday at Gonzales?? :D

6mmintl 03-04-2013 7:45 PM

I like this!
Open scope shootoffs at rams offhand.
Open irons shootoffs at rams offhand.
Open sporter shootoffs at rams offhand.

Master - shoots everything standing
AAA - shoots chickens, turkeys and rams standing
AA - shoots rams and pigs standing
A - shoots pigs standing
B - shoots nothing standing
