Cut Shells
Just saw a video on youtube about cut shells. Turns a regular shotgun shell into a slug. Not sure I would ever really want to do this, but might come in handy sometime when I have no other ammo options. Anyone tried this with success?

they are acutally fun to hit stuff with...not very accurate past 25 yards and super easy to make, however i prefer to make wax slugs
|
A lot of people do it.. though I don't know how consistent it is. I'd imagine if you cut slightly different between each shell you could end up with widely different performance throughout a batch. In other words

Looks like it would cause feeding problems with semi-auto and pump shotguns.

i wouldnt feed it to my 930spx

We did this as teenagers 30+ years ago, my friends dad showed us how. Makes nice holes in the sides of old junk cars. I remember my friends dad always saying that should not try them unless you can fit a dime in the end of your barrel. I call them red neck slugs now.

I've shot a few, they are fun, cheap, and can really put the hurtin on a pumpkin. Last time I shot one, the hull got lodged in the barrel
Couldn't shoot it anymore that day. Had to take it home and peel it off the inside of the barrel. (it was too stuck for a cleaning rod to knock out) |
Only use in single or double barrel shotguns.

Even through a cylinder choke, I wouldn't shoot a cut shell. The diameter of the shell is far greater than the diameter of the barrel. Try sticking a shell through the muzzle end... you can't. That said, the shell is plastic and will probably compress.
If you want to shoot cheap slugs, look into wax slugs. |
Its good to know that if you were in a tight situation and really needed a slug but only had bird shot you could make one in a pinch. But in a normal situation I say just pony up the dough and buy some slugs. :)

Guys, they have been doing this for over a century. It is a way to make slugs when you don't have access to slugs. It was really popular in the back woods during the depression in the 1930s. Is it safe? Mostly. Is it a good idea? Probably not. It is one of those things that is useful to know, but not all that useful to do except in emergencies. And truthfully, I think the wax slug concept works better. People tend to get much more reliable results out of that. Without the increased chance of plugging up your barrel with a chunk of torn shell casing.

Monkeyboy nailed it. It's good to know if you need to do it, but otherwise you you have other, better, maybe safer(?) options. Heck, if you're close enough the wad will kill anything in your path, no matter what's in the shell. At least put a good hurt on them.

I prefer wax slugs, but that works as well. Either way I only use bubba ammo like that out of a double barrel or single shot.

Can it be done with regular birdshot shells? Or only buckshot shells?
