looking for advice on a bolt action

I've been tossing around the idea of owning my first bolt rifle for sometime now and i think im ready to give it a go. i would like something of a decent quality without breaking the bank. i would prefer a all included package (rifle, scope, bipod). it doesnt have to be a tack driver but decent enough to where im not all over the place. max distance i would be shooting is 300 yards and preferred caliber is 308. my max budget would be in the 600 dollar range. its primary use is paper punching and learning exp. Thanks for any and all input!

You can get a rifle for free along with free training - contact any Marine Corps recruiter for free rifles! He'll set you up! LOL

PS: Remember the difference between a rifle and a gun - see "Full Metal Jacket" for details

Uhh yeah... great use of an old joke and not providing any input for the guy.

dhomoki1125, you mentioned a budget of $600. Is that for the scope, bipod, and rifle? You're really limiting yourself if that's the case. A bipod and scope(bargain priced, but we're not talking about airsoft chinese junk) plus mount/rings is going to eat $200-$300+ of that budget without even including sales tax and DROS, leaving you without enough to actually cover the rifle.

Savage makes a couple of rifle/scope packages. They make several decent and affordable rifles IMO.

You can find Savage bolt actions packaged with Nikon scopes, they're a great place to start.

that 770 looks pretty good. any issues with those?

rolncode3 12-03-2012 1:54 PM

I bought a Savage 10FP in 308 as my first bolt action. As long as I fed it decent stuff it was just fine out to 300yds. Mil surplus stuff was a little erratic. I forget how much I paid, but wasn't more than a few hundred. Then I stuck a Leupold scope on it that cost just as much.

I like my TC Venture, its inexpensive, but you will have to get a scope separate.

NO.

Worst piece of junk I've laid my hands on.

Don't buy the 770. It's garbage. There are lots of bad reviews on the 770. Get a savage trophy hunter xp. It's a great package gun that comes with the accutrigger and a Nikon pro staff scope. And you can find it for less than $500.

shooterbill 12-03-2012 1:57 PM

The 770 doesn't get good reviews. Take a look at the Savages. Very accurate. Some models don't look so great, but they will shoot better than most of the people shooting them. The Axis is about $300 with a scope. The scope isn't very good. You could always replace it with higher quality.

khw9mm 12-03-2012 1:57 PM

I wouldn't look for a package deal since most times the scope that comes with it is crap. An alternative might be to find a used rem 700 .308 or get them whenever they're on sale and a Bushnell 10x scope.

Aside from that good luck with the "decent quality without breaking the bank" part. :)
