Which >50 year old P-38 are C&R?

The BATFE’s C&R list sweeps all Walther post war P-38’s into C&R status if they were manufactured for the police or military, or issued to military or police forces. How do I evaluate a post war Walther P-38 to know whether it was “manufactured for” the police or military? I did some Googling for articles but did not find anything useful for this specific question.

I meant to use the “<“ symbol in the title line.

Thanks. So the matte finished guns were manufactured for the military market and the glossy blued pistols were produced for the civilian market?

Nope...

There were both types of finishes made for the commercial market. It's about the specific markings on the pistols.

Both of the pistols I posted in the other thread had commercial markings. Both were "Interarms" commercial imports. Both were post 1968, and pre 1986 imports.

A lack of "commercial" importer markings could be one bit of evidence.

Many post war P-38 and P-1 military / police pistols had specific dates of manufacture on their slides.

Proof marks could also indicate military / police or Govt. issue.

Look at this forum. It may give you some help.

Bought a P1 pistol from Classic about 5 years ago and it was C&R, and it was manufactured in the 80's.

Thanks everyone, it looks like this P38 was produced for the military market.

That's because in Timbuktu C&R laws do not apply. :D

I got this one about 6 years ago in Arizona. It was made in the 80's too.

Just get a WWII one, the date is stamped right on them.

The P1 is still on the roster anyway.
