Ak builder in Sacto. area

Im looking to meet a good builder to help me out with a Ca legal Ak build. I have been looking up info and pricing parts but i dont want to get in over my head by ordering stuff that is crap or worse yet no Ca. legal.

Maybe I could sit in on a build party in the area. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for your quick reply
well at this point im in the early stages of planning so if it does end up being a few months till I get this build going I will be sure to let you know.

Im still leaning toward a 5.56 barrel variant but if its easier to build a 7.62 then im all for it. like i said in the first post I dont want to get in over my head.

5.45 might be better if you want that type of caliber. The only extra thing I think I would need for a 5.45 build would be head space gauges and I need them for a future build anyway.

AK-Builder.com is probably the best place for you to grab a kit.

only reason I want to go 5.56 is for ammo availability for stuff that is not just mil-surplus. 7.62 is ok with me and is probably easier not having to deal with the different mags and the different bullet feed ramp in the front trunion.
so for simplicity I am now leaning toward 7.62 and fixed stock.

no I have to think about and researching the following;
1. building from a flat or buy already done receiver (what requires paperwork through a ffl)
2. heat treating (the hole rec. or just the trigger group holes)
3. screws or rivets (i saw a build where they used screws to hold the receiver to tapped holes in the trunions)
I assume rivets would be best though so Im 99% sure I will be using rivets.
4. how easy would it be to add ak type scope mount rail deal to the side

more reading to do.

A Nodak Spud receiver can be $70-110 plus shipping and DROS paperwork. Plus a 10 day wait. It is fully heat treated and the canter support is already done and the rails are already in.

2. Heat treating the fire control group and the ejector is all you need if you bend your own flat. Easy to do. Again, Nodak is already done.

3. Taking the time to tap the holes is stupid if you have access to a press and jigs. Do rivets, like these AKs were meant to be done.

4. Easy to add a scope rail as part of the build, not as easy if you do it as an afterthought. The scope rail mounts on the right side and uses one of the rear trunion rivets to hold it in place, plus a few more.

I have a few bent flats and a few Nodaks. My first build was Nodak and the Tula AKS74U I have waiting to be built is one also. The rest have been flats and one re-weld. Nodak is much easier and looks a little cleaner in the long run. It will take you about 2-3 hours (if you are a quick learner) to get your receiver to where the Nodak is. Then there is the rest of the build...

Nodak is taking pre-orders on their NDS-1 EZ receiver for late Nov-early Dec so I may get in on that if I can find a local FFL to do the DROS for me. I kind of want the end result to be nice so im leaning toward just getting the Nodak receiver so I dont have to fuss with putting the rails in and drilling all the holes. I still will have to source the scope rail and put that on but its looks simple enough to do. I dont have access to a large press to install a barrel so Im looking at a kit that has the barrel installed into the trunion and properly headspaced with the correct bullet guide.

still researching on more options. Is a semi-auto RPK an option? I really like the idea of having a integrated bipod just looks kick ***.

A can also help populate the barrel but pre populated shaves a few hours of time off. You will have to headspace with gauges either way though.

You have more build kits than I have ideas for just my one build. stock pile much? :D

I should keep it as simple as possible so a RPK may be better for a later build.

either way I know I have to check headspace. Im not going to risk my life hoping someone did it correctly in the assembly. If I dont check it the best case scenario is they did it right and its good to go, worst case is they are off and I end up dead after my newly built ak explodes on me. yeah its best to take the time and check the headspace in any case, call it insurance i guess.

Im going to see about ordering a receiver. If it seems to be to much trouble i guess I can order a flat. Im really only in the planning and sourcing part of the build but am so excited I couldn't sleep last night. This reminds me of when it took me two weeks to clean and rework an Albanian SKS I once had. So much fun to have a project.

Again thanks for you help and input. It is greatly appreciated.

Sacramento Area Build Group

Hi, I live in O'vale and would be interested in joining a build group in this area. Have you been successful in finding a group to join? thx Rmcb

dynamomark80 11-16-2012 7:20 PM

Nope. People may help out but I don't know about them hosting a build party. It look that the Bay area is far more active when it comes to build parties.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I wouldnt mind getting in on this if it were to happen ?

I will be ordering myself an AK cal legal kit for Christmas.

hello i know this is an older thread but i do have the 1.5mm bending jig. if you need to use it let me know i need to barrow a spot welder to continue my build

dynamomark80 03-17-2013 7:57 AM

thats nice of you. Im still planning my build but just waiting to see what happens with the anti-gun politics. Just on pause for the moment and it doesnt help that Im off to Mexico for my vacation late April either.

Im at the point now that I have done much of the research on the build I just need to order all the stuff. I still havent found parts kits for a reasonable price but on the bright side receivers and flats are now available for $30-$40. My biggest hurdle now is finding a hydraulic press to use for the barrel install and riveting since I wouldnt want to buy one to put in my Apt.

bigjon69 03-17-2013 3:37 PM

well you could install the barrel with some copper tubing and hammer still using headspace guages. and you can do a screw build. one person built an ak using tootk picks to hold front trunnion to the receiver it worked. all of the bolt thrust is contained in the trunnion

tvfreakarms 03-25-2013 3:08 PM

I have all my parts kit and ready to go.
i would like to get on this as well

I would rather not just pond my barrel in. I looked into a screw build but i think I will pass on it for my first build.

where did you find a parts kit? I see $200 kits made to work with a milled receiver but I dont want to spend a ton on a milled receiver.

tvfreakarms 04-02-2013 3:22 AM

I had my parts kit since last year. I wished i bought more than one but at least i have one ready to go.
I really want to get this built
