Contemplating a .22

Ok, my wife and I trade off on our gun purchases and I get the next one. Im leaning toward a .22 to add to my collection. They are fun, inexpensive and economical to shoot.

Question: Should I purchase a dedicated .22 rifle; 10-22, Savage 64 and the like, or should I get a .22 kit for my AR15? How reliabel are the drop-in .22 kits from CMMG? DPMS just came out with a dedicated .22 upper, its kinda pricey for a .22 but could be a viable option.

Thoughts?

CMMG Sierra .22lr upper. Only about $100 more than the drop in kit and (from what I've heard) WAY more reliable. I have one with about 3000 rounds through it and 0 weapon related malfunctions. Oh and I haven't cleaned it once. :cool2:

10/22----Its a barbie gun--
Dedicated AR upper--Feels like an AR--Still a Barbie gun

In other words...Both

badduggy 07-09-2012 2:00 PM

i really like my mp15-22. it can wear real ar accessories and has been reliable from day 1.

Excaliburr 07-10-2012 6:06 AM

No on the Savage 64, Yes on the Ruger 10/22 (everybody should have one of those IMO) and a dedicated .22 upper is the best.

SpunkyJivl 07-10-2012 8:00 AM

Wife has a Savage 64, its OK but Im sure there are better. Leaning hard towards a dedicated .22 rifle. Either a 10/22 or check out the Mossberg 802, I like the idea of bolt action.

23's Dad 07-10-2012 9:12 AM

This is a bolt action!

Not my posting, but I own a similar one:

A little pricey for most, but I think it is worth it! You'll have the only one at your range, unless we're both at the same one...:D

10/22 is something I think everyone should have.

As for drop in vs dedicated upper....prolly depends on how much you intend to shoot it

Thats nice, but quite a bit more than I want to spend on a plinker. $400 is my total budget. Probably a $200 rifle and a nice scope.

Look into a bolt-action Savage MK II. I have the G model... wood stock, iron sights, AccuTrigger. I love it. Fits right in your budget.

Marlin 795 is around $150 at most sales.
If you're not looking to do any heavy mods (if so, get a Ruger) and want a basic reliable shooter out of the box, the 795 is a great autoloader. I'm looking to get a .22 bolt action, but I already have so many mags for the 795, I decided to take the red dot off and put a scope on it. Very happy.

scope on sale:

Leupold 1" rings are about $15 most places

$14 per mag + $10 for shipping

("Thank you" to another Calgunner who pointed to me to this price)
these mags are normally $17-20

you'll get better dedicated equipment, the combo above is the best bang for the buck IMO

I had a conversion kit for my AR and didn't really like it. I decided to just buy a dedicated .22 rifle. My Sig 522 Commando has been very reliable, practically 100%. I'm also picking up a Smith MP22 next week and have a Ruger SR22 waiting 30 days after that.

.22 is great to practice with and very fun to shoot. Let us know what you choose!

23's Dad 07-11-2012 8:44 AM

yeah, it's a bit of a slippery slope

Once you use start shooting the high-end rimfire rifles, you really can't bring yourself to shoot a "plinker", it will ruin you!

You can get a Marlin XT22 bolt action rifle. The 795 and XT22 uses the same magazine. I love my XT22.

Marlin Model 60. Great rifle, accurate out of the box, the tube will hold more than 10 rounds and no magazines to buy, lose or accidentally leave at home.

The Right to Bear Arms 07-12-2012 10:33 PM

Hello,

I recommend getting a Rifle in 22LR.

To reiterate V.O.R.'s post. If you just want to shoot out of the box. The Marlin 795. If you want to modify then the Ruger 10/22. Both shoot exceedingly well and have all the versatility that you will ever need.

If you go with the Marlin, I'm thinking all you need is a good sling, swivels, 3 extra magazines, and the Tech Sights. You can do all that for approximately $300.

I do like some of the aftermarket stocks for the Ruger though. I believe " Archangel " is one of their popular sets.

Whenever, I'm in the tactical mood though. I'd rather just shoot that bigger caliber through an AK / AR platform.

The World's your oyster. Address your priority and you'll be great.

Ive been doing some shopping over the last few days. I've narrowed it down to a Ruger 10/22 tactical, or a Henery lever action. Completely opposite ends of the spectrum. I loved the butter smooth action of the Ruger. Have not yet handled a lever action .22, only a 30-30.

A .22 lever gun is kinda underwhelming. I love .22 rilfes but I did not enjoy the Henry Golden Boy I shot at the range.

Excaliburr 07-16-2012 7:34 PM

Ruger 10/22 just to reiterate. Buy the standard version or the stainless or even better the take down. Then buy a good optic and you are set. I also like to add a VQ auto bolt upgrade and smooth out the trigger while I have it out. This will last you a lifetime, especially if you change the recoil buffer to VQ as well!

CSACANNONEER 07-16-2012 7:51 PM

Keep checking used racks at your lgs. You can score some great deals on old .22s.

jyo 07-16-2012 8:12 PM

10-22---you NEED one!

SpunkyJivl 01-07-2013 6:01 PM

Thought Id resurrect this post from the dead.

As an update to getting a .22 LR rifle.

I went with a Ruger 10/22 Tactical. I put about 300 rounds through it then decided to go on a little upgrade spree.

-Slapped on a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9 Scope
-Picked up 3 additional mags
-Picatinny scope rail
Went to tactical innovations and purchased:
-Stainless billet trigger
-Stainless extended mag release
-Stainless charging handle and guide spring
-Auto bolt release mechanism

Of all the guns I have ever owned, this is my favorite by far. I even prefer it to my AR.

smittty 01-07-2013 6:35 PM

Tactical = S&W 15-22
Traditional semi-auto = Ruger 10/22
Old school = CZ 452 or Savage MKII
C&R = Winchester 62
Classy = Browning Semi-auto 22
Survivalist = Ruger 10/22 Take-Down

Red Ranger 01-07-2013 6:57 PM

Good choice sir, I prefer my 10/22 to all my other guns too!
