Agency selling off firearms. How do I handle the transfer?
 

I just got a phone call with a question that I am kind of lost on. The local community college is in possession of several firearms (pistols and long guns), and they have no use for them and want to sell them off to recoup some money. I was asked if I could handle these transactions. Since the firearms are owned by an agency (former campus security), how can I go about helping these folks out? I am not a secondhand dealer. Is there a way I can legally do this? If so, how? Thanks in advance!

Anyone? Im pretty lost on this still. Called DOJ and they said Id have to buy these firearms from the agency and keep them in my inventory for 30 days, at which point I could then sell them. Does this sound correct? The lady I talked to did not sound too confident on this...

Sounds like a secondhand dealer situation, hence the 30 day wait.

So even though Im not a licensed secondhand dealer this would work because I hold the firearms for 30 days?

What FFL do you hold?
What state is the school / agency located?
What state are you legally a resident?

No, it would not work since you are not a secondhand dealer and don't have the permit, nor access to the FDAS system. You could personally buy them.

Are there buyers for them? If so, it could be done as a normal transfer.

There are buyers for them. The problem I see is how do I handle the transfer. It obviously cant be a PPT, so do I just run this as if I was receiving a firearm from a private party who sold a firearm to another party?

You can do it as normal transfer. The issue is if you acquire firearms for your inventory (including consignments).
