View Full Version : AK sight sucks - What you guys have?

We all know the generic AK iron sight sucks.

I'm thinking about going with the Meprolight Tritium sight for AK.

What do you guys use on your AKs?

I use an ACE AKSMS rail which has a AR15 windage sight for BUIS. I've mounted an Aimpoint clone (Hakko, Japan) to the rail.

Both the BUIS and the red dot work great. Unfortunatley, the ACE AKSMS is no longer in production.

Get a real Russian Optic and mount for a Russian Gun. This is what the Russian Military uses and is 1/3 the price of US made. And us the Made In Belarus Mount. All others are cheap fakes.

Russia do not use scopes made in Belarus, it's their version of a Hong Kong knock off

Russian scopes are not for sale in the civilian market in the U.S. which is why companies selling alleged Russian scopes have "Belarus" marks indicating origin. Belarus allows exports.

Those are the Fakes that made it to the market. Buy from Tantals and you will not get a Fake.

the belarus made POSP I got is built like a tank.
Belarus was making them back inthe soviet days anyway.
if tantals is so great and want business from US customers, get a freaking online ordering system for crying out loud. a three year old could make a better website than that.

I have a Mojo, but am in the process of adding an Eotech. I also have a POSP, but haven't had much of a chance to use it yet. I wound up ordering the old-style Mojo without the click adjustments by mistake, but I don't care. If you get the old-style Mojo, superglue the screws after you've got the sight adjusted.

I'd like to add a tritium front sight to the mix, but the tritium rear sight? Eh. I hate notch-type rear sights on rifles. Heck, my handgun doesn't even have that kind of sight! http://www.xssights.com/sightimages.html If I ever need to use my rifle in the dark, a front sight is all I'll need anyway. Front sight center of mass and fire for effect!

The big problem I ran into with the standard-style sights was aligning them (or realigning them) quickly when I wanted to. A ghost ring or peep is a lot more intuitive and just faster to get back on target, especially when the target is close and "good enough" is good enough. :43:

I've got the Belarus POSP. It seems to be very well-made, for commie stuff.

Hmm...I saw the Belarus side mount for $50ish on eBay.
Think I'll get that and slap an Eotech or Aimpoint on it and call it a day, since I don't plan to rely on my AK past 100 yards anyway.

The question is do I order the low profile mount or the higher version of the same mount?

Correct if I'm wrong but when I look at my buddy's setup AK side mount, the optic does not line up vertically with the receiver. It actually looks offset so you have to change the red dot sight, when zeroing, to compensate.
I don't know that much about AKs but it seems that the Ultimak setup is the best thing going. Slap on an EOTech on that Ultimak mount and you've got a slammin' setup.

He didn't use a Made in Belarus than. The knock off's will do that. Mine is centered good. AK's were built to have a side mount.

I use a Aimpoint T-1 on a early proto-Samson K-Rail (the TD Stubby VFG is MIA in this photo). The AK's Iron Sighs pretty much suck for even docile shooting on a bench at static targets...it only gets worse when stuff starts moving. I found this setup to work pretty well.

Vandal - Seeing how we have similar setups, how do you like yours?

I could say the same thing to you about rifles with pistol grips and flash hiders, folding stocks, removable magazines, suppressor's, full auto (you know, the way they were meant to be) Oh, I forgot you can't have that stuff.

I either own or have access to all those things.
I didn't just fall off the turnip truck.

Anyone consider this peep sight since some people don't like the slot?

It's only $20 but I'm uncertain on the quality or if it'll work at all.

On a separate note my "Belarus" scope mount came in and I tried to attach it to my NDS-3 receiver for about 5 minutes before I realize I don't have a "side rail scope mount"....Doh!

I just saw Wilit's thread asking how to install the "side rail", and FEDUPWBS's link on how to install it.
Basically more drilling and riveting to install the side rails....bah.
Guess I'll keep the "Belarus" mount if/when my RPK order ever comes in.

Be advised, many people running this same setup have ended up frying their EOtechs. The gas tube will melt the plastic internals of the EOtech when it gets hot.

Yah i would watch out for frying that nice piece of glass......the eotechs are nice and durable, but then again you mostly see them on nice ARs....AKs are a little rougher during operation and will tend to get a little hotter... at least with my experience.

I have that sight. Works very good except for some things. First, the hole you see there has a screw which adjusts the elevation. A problem with that is it can be distracting when you look through the peep. Another thing is once you adjust the windage you might have to add some blue loctite so that it won't move because it also uses a screw to hold in place. Other than that it's much not that bad for a 20 dollar sight.

I like the look and function of the G3 sights added to an AK top cover, like Tony @ Tromix does...

http://www.tromix.com/images/8inchLage3w.jpg

IMHO either the HK sights or retro-fit to Galil or Valmet top cover (if you can find one)...

I plan to sell some AK top covers w/G3 sights welded in place ready to use with OEM AK front sights (or optional G3 triple frame in front)

Another "cheap" option is to simply weld/solder a small washer to the back of the AK sight and then use solder and a drill bit to make the peep-sight hole the size you want it to be....

There is also the "Krebs" rear peep sight:

http://billstclair.com/blog/images/krebs-peep-489x370.jpg

Ive often thought about getting a low profile scope mount for the side rail on my SAIGA and then using a BUIS for an AR on the scope rail... would be a nice solid mount and repeatable if you needed to remove it...

http://www.parts4ak47.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/KV-04S.jpg
Rail similar to this, but as LOW as possible (might have to cut/weld the rail)

http://www.deltaforce.com/catalog/media/DPMSRearSiteDet.jpg
BUIS similar to this mounted on the rail above... just have to get it all to jive w/the front sight....

I would love to make some AK peeps for you guys...if you guys want to make a peep for your AK or SAIGA, let me know. I have a .223 SAIGA to use as a test bed for mounting/etc.

They do so long as you're not above the gas piston. :D

Personally, I would avoid EOTechs until they solve the electronic/battery issues they've had...
