Do such a thing exist? Saw someone at the range rattling off a ton of .22LR out of an AR-15 and it peeked my curiousity

(I could care less if his mag was legal, he's an adult and that's his problem/choice).

yes they made loads and loads of the metal ones with the welded on metal hoop

the new ones made of polymer are recent production

Yes- I think I have one somewhere.. I never bought a .22 upper, so I stashed it in 'purgatory' storage about 10 years ago. They were dirt cheap before 1994- I should've sold mine in 99 :D
