Okay i did some searching here in CGN and also on google/yahoo. Im interested in a bolt action rifle for precision shooting because my mosin nagant m91/30 (even though i love that gun) it just doesnt cut it for me anymore (besides i dont handload). So I need to upgrade for my hunting and target shooting needs. Im considering between 2 guns to choose from, which is the Remington 700 and the Weatherby Vanguard that was discussed in a two threads awhile back.

Im guessing from the major consensus from other threads, the Remington 700 is the top choice because of the vast aftermarket that is readily available and its considered the standard among many. But does anyone know about the 700 Classic??? Whats the difference between the Classic and the SPS besides the stock? I understand both rifles will suit my hunting needs with some proper glass and ammo. But specifically, is the 700 Classic with an upgraded stock, base, and glass worth the trouble or should I just go straight for an SPS or some different 700 variant?

Here is exactly what im looking at. The Vanguard is below.

Start handloading first.
Then get a better rifle that you can fully appreciate.

The are so many different 700s its hard to keep track, but I don't think there's much more of a difference between the classic and the SPS. More importantly aren't both of those rifles used? The most important consideration should be how many rounds have been through them already.

No, it is not worth the trouble. The only reason to get the Classic is because you want that classic look, just get the 700 that has the stock you want already. What exactly are you going to be using this for? You mention both hunting and target shooting but at what ranges? I prefer the Remy and I don't know much about Weatherby so I'm gonna focus on the 700s. A base SPS is a good multipurpose rifle but depending on what ranges and if you're willing to spend a little more a varmint or tactical will be better. Also are you set on .30-06? Its a great round and the debate will go on forever in this country but unless you are looking for a more classic gun consider 308 (the tactical rifles come only in 223 and 308 too).
