I am starting to shop around for an upper. I see that some offer to have them (flash hiders) permanently fixed to the barrel, and some offer the "unpinned" option. If its a 16" barrel, can I get it "unpinned" being that I am in Calif? Or does it matter? Thanks ahead... have at it.

If you have a fixed-mag setup, than it does not have to be permanent. However you can not have a flash hider on a featurless build

and only if you need to make your barrel length 16" or >

:xeno: No with a 16" barrel you should not need to "pin" the FH just make sure that the gun is over 30" long.

It will go on an OLL with BB and 100,000 round mag. Um, I mean 10 round:rolleyes:

Ooook... lots of incorrect info so far :)

1.) flash hiders are features for semi-automatic centerfires, so only on locked mag (and registered AW) AR builds can have them (at all)
2.) they ONLY need to be permanent to meet the Federal total barrel length 16"

So if the barrel itself is or exceeds 16 inches, then it doesnt have to be perm?
But if the barrel was 15 and a half, adding a permenant FH makes it 16"+ barrel... thus, making it legal.
Calif requires ALL barrels to be 16" + correct?

2nd, you guys think 16" barrel is good length for a TactiCool rifle? Or too short?

:xeno: No with a 16" barrel you should not need to "pin" the FH just make sure that the gun is over 30" long.

And also note that you do NOT have to pin a muzzle device that GETS you over 30" OAL.

So if your gun is 29" and a flash hider makes it 30.5" long, that flash hider does NOT need to be pinned unless the barrel is less than 16" long.

What will you be doing with your rifle? If you're making an M4gery, the M4 is 14.5"

If you want flexibility, but still try to be short, get 16".

If you want extra velocity, go 18".

If you want to shoot long distances or varmint from fixed positions, go 24".

So if the gun is less then 30" oal, w/ or w/o FH, its illegal?

Building a more TactiCool rife here.
Got my varmint squared away already a few weeks ago (thanks UCLA!)

So if the gun is less then 30" oal, w/ or w/o FH, its illegal?

If it has a 16"+ barrel and it's under 30" OAL without a flash suppressor,
you can screw a flash suppressor on the barrel to make it over 30" and you would be legal.
It would NOT need to be permanent attached in this case.

If it has a barrel under 16" long, you can permanent attach a flash suppressor on the barrel to make it over 16" and you would be legal.
