My brother gave me this rifle a while ago and I gave it to a gunsmith to have it cleaned and checked out. I then threw it in my closet and now I'm wondering where it was built or even who built it I can't read the complete wording on the barrel.
model-336-R.C-30-30 CAL
the...................CO. NEW HAVEN CONN USA EST 1870
I think that is what it says.

I'm not sure but I think it's a Marlin?

Looks like a Marlin lever action. The "336" is a model number that Marlin still uses today. I have one of their new 336 XLR .30-30 lever guns. Doesn't look a whole lot different than yours.

Been around for a number of years and quite popular. Looks like it might be an earlier one.
Shoots .30-30 which is a very popular lever action cartridge. Not sure of the collector value on it.
Our Hero of Chappaquadick once wanted to ban them as being cop-killers. Suppose he'd do it in an eyeblink if he got the support he needed on the hill.

Thanks guys. according to the Marlin site my rifle's serial number F43177 means it was built in 1949. I wonder how many deer this rifle took?:61:

It's a C&R then, meaning if you'd like to sell it you can do a cash-and-carry transfer. No FFL or DROS necessary! :D

Think its worth having it reblued and the stock replaced ?

Think its worth having it reblued and the stock replaced ?

Reblueing would hurt any collector value it may have.

Think its worth having it reblued and the stock replaced ?

Not unless you want to ruin its value as a collectable.

what are your plans for the rifle...? if it'll just be a shooter, do what you'd like..., if you're a collector or want to sell it to one, leave it alone... look up the value online to help with your descision...
