I need to choose a barrel. 16" - 18" mid length gas.

Shooting 55 - 62 gn .223 .556 @ steel 100 yards.

Not sure what twist rate or if I should try a wylde chamber.

Please post if you have a barrel to recommend that has worked good for you.

Thanks

Are you shooting for groups or just plinking?

My go to AR15 barrel is Randall

ETD: I go with a 16" pencil barrel. It's plenty accurate for hitting 10" dongs and light enough to shoot off hand.

Both really... I plan on throwing Walmart ammo at steel plates at 100 yards and I can share some of my rem 700 .223 handloads and put it on a bench.

14.5 Noveske Skinny Mo barrel is my favorite go to rifle. Its super-light and consistently very accurate. Yes, it heats up pretty fast, but cools down faster than my Noveske Afghan SS heavy barrel build. I want another one.

My Daniel Defense 16" pencil is pretty good. I got a DTI 1/9 non chrome 20" that is super accurate.

Go with a
5.56 - 223-remington-wylde-medium-contour-1-in-8-twist in a 18" stainless-steel barrel and never look back ! It does it all !

A 16" long 223 wylde chambered lightweight barrel with a 1:9 twist would be my pick for that job.

You will have to shop around.
I don't deal in parts so I don't keep track of who makes what and what they sell it for.

Google turns up these, but they are 1:8 twist:

The FN barrels at Raffle Gear are in that price range, very durable and way above average in accuracy.
Mine shoots an easy inch with most everything I bring.
It's a 14.5" middy, but they have different lengths and stuff available.

Noveske = overpriced mall ninja crud.

my 16" SS nordic midlength with wylde chamber outshoots my 16" bcm midlength lightweight chrome lined barrel.

my buddy's 16" noveske chrome lined barrel outshoots both of them.

all other ar barrels i've shot havent been for groupings, so i cant say i prefer one over another, but they all go bang and are accurate enough.

I really like my 14.5 mid CHF Noveske barrel but I'm also waiting on the BCM BHF ELW profile with its tapered design its supposed to be a sweet pointing barrel.

same barrel as mine, highly recommend. very accurate, well machined feed ramps, seems like a very good value at its price point.

why not get a PSA CHF upper. comes with a CHF barrel from FN on it. on sale you can pick one up for around 300.

99% of people will never shoot enough, or require enough accuracy to notice the difference.

^^^^ this. in shooting offhand, all our AR's shoot the same. its when you get onto a bench that the very minute differences begin to show up. and once im done zeroing my sights, its bye bye bench. honestly, i feel the muzzle device makes a bigger difference than the barrel. there have been many good options given in this thread, and many at reasonable prices.
