Bad news for everyone who has been buying our rebuild kits. About a month ago we sold 35 AR15 magazine kits to a guy in CA. The floorplates on these were marked "Military/Gov't Use Only" and this guy is having a hissy fit because he thinks he is going to get in trouble. He even went behind our back to call our distributor of said magazines to see if they would send him unmarked floorplates and the representative wasn't very keen on the idea of shipping their magazines (which also have their name on floorplate) to CA. I tried explaining to the Rep. that it was perfectly legal but he wouldn't hear nothing of it and is threatening to cut our account.

After I got off the phone with the Rep., I called and spoke with "Mike" at the CA Dept. of Justice to verify my actions and while he did say it was legal to ship the kits, he also explained that it is a very grey "shaded" area to be in as far as a Dealer to ship them and that the shades of grey will vary from county to county and that in the end if anyone is proven guilty of assembling these kits into complete magazines, that it will fall in the hands of the dealer who sold them. He also stated that the kits could NOT contain every piece of the magazine, it had to be short a piece. To be honest, we have been shipping complete kits, not knowing this is illegal.

We are a very small business run by my wife and I and just can't afford for something to happen that could put the business in jeopardy. I know this is going to be bad news for a lot of you but I hope you guys understand our situation. There are still some companies out there that will provide this service so hopefully they can take care of you but unfortunately we are going to have to call it "our loss" and throw in our towel so to speak.

I also want to take a moment to thank everyone in CA who has bought kits from us. You guys have been very supportive and loyal and we want to thank you for your business. Hopefully we can still help with other firearm related parts and accessories.

how dare you not offer sig mags!

i actually need a sig body, for some reason one of my sig mags does not drop when the mag release is pressed, have to manually remove it. doesn't bother me too much, i just make sure it's the last mag i load. i still want to replace it though as my ocd takes over every time i have to take it out.

Oops, I was wrong! :o
See the links below to Gene's input on rebuilds.

Rebuild kits are only to rebuild your existing normal capacity magazines you owned before the ban.
Rebuilds do not to replace, upgrade (Sig to Mec Gar), or give you new different model magazines with higher capacity (12 to 15 rounds)!
What you are requesting is illegal.

Are you sure? I though you could. Isn't a high cap a high cap? 12 or 15 rounds.

What you are requesting is illegal and if we want vendors to continue shipping rebuild kits to CA, people shouldn't make requests that could subject the vendor to liability.

I don't know about that now. A 12 round magazine is already a "high-capacity" magazine so you aren't converting a non-high-cap magazine to a high-cap magazine.

Also, I don't believe you need to use the exact same part to replace the magazine with. You can buy a different brand spring such as Wolff because they are better. I don't see how buying a different brand body is any different such as replacing a 10 round straight AR magazine with the Bushmaster 10/20 curved magazine.

I don't see any literature stating what you are saying is illegal.

Bzzzzzzzt. If you had a large-capacity magazine before the ban there is nothing in the law limiting you from replacing all the parts over time and creating a magazine that can accept even more rounds.

-Gene

Start here: http://www.hoffmang.com/firearms/DOJ-large-cap-magazines-2005-11-10.pdf

If you have a large capacity magazine you can repair it. There is no limitation on repairing it into a different size. The only limitation seems to be that you can not modify a large-capacity magazine in such a way that it now works for a different firearm and not the original firearm - though I don't see a lot of basis in the law for that last part.

-Gene

Obviously, We don't want to do anything illegal here, but I thought it was perfectly fine. Can anybody else chime in?

We have been trying to find a decent (fair priced) source for Sig Mec-Gar magazines for quite a while now but have come up empty handed each time. I will be sure to post here as soon as we do though.

I too am disappointed, no Sig mags and the CZ mags are the 16 rounders. I am kinda paranoid, so when I rebuild a mag I want it to have the same capacity as the original one. So for my Sig 226 and CZ 75, its 15 rounds and for my 228, its 13 rounds.

If you folks stumble into some 15 rounder Sig or CZ mags and 13 rds 228 please let me know. Well, let the forum members know. We appreciate your efforts and look forward to doing business with you.

I'm gonna have to do some checking but I'm not aware of a CZ-75 15rd in 9mm. 10rd and 16rd is all I'm aware of other than 14rd for the compact.

We are working on some Mec-Gar Sig magazines though. May be another week or two but it's in the process.

Shooters Plus, good to hear about the Sig magazine. In a couple of weeks you say... that will give me time to replenish my wallet as I've just been gang raped by the IRS and the Franchise tax board.

By the way, the CZ 15 rounders was the original factory mag capacity of the CZ 75, but I believe CZ has adopted the 16 round configuration. I think the 15 rounders are still available direct from CZ in Kansas, but they won't sell a rebuilt kit to someone in Kali. I don't blame them though.

Have a nice weekend.

Shooter Plus-

great option.. i shoot a lot of uspsa and my glock mags are starting to get worn and beat.. I mainly need new springs, but its' just more economical to purchase everything in the form of rebuild kits than to individually purchase springs + floorplates + followers etc etc...

I'll definitely keep you guys in mind if and when i decide to revamp my magazines...

Looks like the factory Sig magazines are going to be put on the back burner for a while as Sig Arms now require dealers to purchase at least 5 Sig handguns per year to qualify as a dealer and unfortunately we do not sell handguns at this time. We will however be getting some of the Mec-gar Sig magazines in within a few weeks.

Sorry for the bad news guys. I tried.

LOL reminds me of the good ol' Browning Hi-Power. I hated having to pull the empty mags out, so I finally broke down and bought the new style mags with the little spring to eject them from the magwell. After a while I missed the old non-drop mags so I took the springs off.

Hello there, I have some questions about magazines if you don't mind...

I previously ordered a magazine kit from elsewhere and asked just for the "case". (my old one had a crack on the side from misuse). Anyhow, they sent me one, but it is marked differently. According to my LE friends, it is illegal because it's marked 10-94 and I am stuck using my origional one because it is blank.

Is there truth to this? Or am I in the clear if I can prove owning my pre-ban mags? What is the difference with buying from your company?

Sorry for the ignorance, I've only shot with friends through the years and never looked into things like this.

Thanks in advance!

it is legal to use the leo parts to repair a magazine but its a red flag to "acting in good faith police" and will probably cause trouble (since many see that leo marking as the breaking of a law either you aquired the mag during the federal ban and broke federal law or you aquired the mag after 2004 which may have broken california law)

the markings were a federal requirement between94-04 california has no laws against the date on the mag

Sorry for the late response. For some reason we are not getting email notifications from Calguns.

I believe bohoki is correct in his response.

As far as the difference in buying from our company, we do not sell individual magazine parts kits such as just a magazine body. All of our kits are complete magazines that have been disassembled. Also none of our GLOCK magazines are marked LEO. All are current production from GLOCK.

Thanks and good luck,

Some Glock's should be in this week sometime and AR's are going to be another 2-3 weeks.

I think (hope) I have responded to everyone's PM's and emails.

UPDATE: Just received a small shipment of a few Glock magazines in today. When these are gone, I am not sure when the next shipment will be as most all manfactures/distributors are completely out of the more popular Glock magazines.

Yes Sir, we are expecting more magazines but the way the supply is right now all of the dealers are just trying to get what we can. Right now all of the major manufaturers and distributors stock looks kinda like Wally World on Christmas Eve.

We should get in a few magazines today but I can't remember off hand exactly which ones. I'll try and keep the thread updated as we receive them.

You can still get magazine parts/kits from a few other vendors here. The guy I spoke to at the CA DOJ today pretty much scared the wits out of us with the Laws and Disclaimers of importing such kits that we have just decided to hold off on the rebuild/repair kits for a while. Hope you understand that we just feel this in the best interest of our business for now.

I don't blame you at all for not wanting to ship full kits anymore; who would want to with all the confused brownshirts at CA-DOJ doing their indivdual duty of scaring the populace into unquestioned compliace. I can't imagine other Calguns vendors would continue shipping full kits after reading this.

Wow.......What a maroon....I would think the floorplate with those markings would be the same as an AR lower marked "Law Enforcemant Use Only" and completely legal. The whole thing about not shipping complete kits seems like FUD. Would you offer kits with a random part missing? Or stock several versions of kits, each version missing the same item? I think not.....

I understand your reasons for "circling the wagons", gotta put food on the table. Hopefully, things work out and you choose to resume kit sales to CA in the future.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays to You and Yours!

Jeff

Well, therein lies a big problem. The useless CA laws regarding hi-cap mags are so ambiguous, a three page explanation is needed to even attempt to explain them in an understandable fashion. It seems also that people within the CA-DOJ don't understand these regulations and that is their job. Instead, they spew FUD and spread fear amongst people trying to comply with the law and run a business.

County by county interpertations of the laws is the real kicker. I mean, come on! It's becoming real obvious why CA has a 15 billion budgetary shortfall this fiscal year. There are way too many idiots on the state payroll making up too many goofy laws and regulations.

i see what the letter said about rebuild parts. but going back to the one piece missing topic, why not sell the one piece missing seperately on a different order? or why not sell everything seperately? multiple orders for multiple parts? then they're no longer "rebuild kits" they'd be just parts right?

I understand your trepidation, but the DOJ is well known for being heavy handed and outright lying to out of state vendors.

You have done nothing illegal and should not worry. There are ZERO laws about magazine parts exporting, which you were doing.

I'm sorry this has caused you stress.

My hope is that you will reconsider and understand that this is a fight with people (the DOJ) who lie, cheat, bully and intimidate when they can't have things "their way."
