Ok, there are some really nice Hi-Powers in the handgun porn thread, but I think John Browning's last design deserves it own thread. So lets see some of those Hi-Powers and Hi-Power clones!

I'll start. Here is my regular blued BHP that I bought about 15 years ago and my BHP Practical that I got about 3 years ago. Both are pretty much stock except for the Cocobolo grips I got from CDNN.

Really nice safety treatment on that Yost. Looks so much easier to use than even the extended factory. I bought a newer 40 cal with black plastic grips, CDNN has some very nice aftermarket coco checkered for only $26.00. Bought them & it really improves the look.

I just bought a used Browning Hi-Power 9mm and picked it up last week. It is a 1971 basic stock model. I tried it at the range already and, 100 rounds in, still no hammer bite with the standard spur hammer. Very happy about that, but I do want to get a C&S No-Bite Chamfered Hammer. Not sure if I should get just the hammer, or the hammer set with sear and springs.

The stock trigger is good even with the magazine disconnect safety in place, so that will stay. No idea if the trigger has had any work done to it, but it's fine as-is. The left-hand safety will be replaced by a C&S Extended Ambi-Safety.

I plan to replace the grips. The stock grips are the standard checkered wood with the red interior, like in Chach's photo above (07-04-2010, 2:37 PM). Oddly, someone wrote their (last?) name and SSN on the inside left panel. Looks like magic-marker, but I wonder if I can sand that out somehow, or just destroy them to prevent anyone using that info. I want to replace the grips with a set of Pachmayr Signature (wrap-around w/ backstrap) grips [like in the pic from beemaze, above], and maybe a set of thin wood checkered grips like in gunsnrovers pics above.

Also, as much as I like this older pistol, I want to get a set of Novak Lo-Mount Tritium night sights for it. Is there a staked-in front post Tritium sight option? I haven't seen any in my research yet.

I don't know how much collector value this pistol might have, if any, but having the slide modified for Novak sights is really making me think...

Personally, I'd keep your C-series HP stock as it is in great condition! Buy a newer model & modify it to your heart's content. As for the stock grips with the red backing, they too have collector value. See if you can wipe off the name/SS# with a mild solvent. I have a spare pair of rubber Pachmayr's for sale (haven't bumped the thread for a while).

IMG, that's nice!! Want to sell her??? I still have 3 BHPs, but I sold my 1987 Belgium made polished blue HP in 1988. The HP was my first hand gun, my dad was an FFL at the time as said this is the last of the belgium made HPs you should buy it. Got it for $325.00 NIB @ cost. Sold it for a Stainless Steel S&W 5906 a year later because I though SS was cool :(

My dad sold it for me but told me I would regret it. It makes me sick everytime I think about it. I picked up another polished blue HP in 1998 but is was not the same as my first. So sad, but I could be happy again if Reese556 sold me his ;)

You traded a 1987 Belgium made polished blue HP for a S&W 5906?! You sir, no longer deserve a 1987 Belgium made polished blue HP! :)

Sorry, but selling that particular BHP would be akin to selling one of my kidneys... :D

OK, I don't post here often. Spend most of my spare time over at TBF -- been hooked on Berettas the past few years. BUT, the second pistol I bought after Bill Clinton renewed my interest in shooting back in 1994 was this H-P Practical.

It went to Novak's last year for a modest upgrade: trigger job (but I kept the mag safety -- after all, I do live in CA), crowned barrel, Novak's strong-side thumb safety, Cylinder & Slide wide trigger with FN hammer and all the small parts done in matte blue. Oh, and some night sights from Trijicon.

I've thought about selling this pistol numerous times over the last 16 years but have never been able to do it. The number one reason is that from the first shot in 1994 to now it has NEVER had a single failure of any kind. That and it feels great in my hand. Here's a pic I took after it came back from Novak's.

.40 cal HP's have one more locking lug than the 9mm's and the recoil spring is heavier. Apply plenty of lube in the locking lugs and shoot it more! It will loosen up a bit so you can pull that slide back with less effort.

Here's a pic of my 215 prefix (military or police contract) HP.

The Mk. II was produced only between 1982-1987-ish.

Notice the grey parkerized finish: (The grips are not original, which are supposed to be the black plastic ones with the thumbrests)

The rib on the slide between the front and rear sights is unique to the Mk. II:

http://i51.tinypic.com/vzu1xd.jpg

The hole in slide below the barrel was designed to help drain the Mk. II of water in case it was immersed during combat:

Aussies are one of the many services that still issue the Hi Power as their standard side arm. If you want to see lots of Hi Powers on the little screen lookup "Sea Patrol" on YouTube.com or Hulu.com. It is a popular Australian TV show about their navy. Kind of like JAG was for us back in the day. Every time a boarding party is sent to check out a ship or head to shore they whip out the Hi Powers.

I would buy one but not for $900+

If you wanted to pick up a used one as a project gun FN High Power beaters on Gunbroker start around $375 and ones in decent shape start around $450. They'll be the early version with built in sights. But they look like a lot of fun to fix up.

The Hi-Power is on my wish list, but sadly my next two handguns are going to have to be something compact for Summer CCW. I already have two full size firearms, and need something to fill a different roll. Eventually a High Power will make it into the collection.

beetle, very impressive example but to me it looks as if it might be post-war 1952-1954 era police issue. I used to have one a few years ago and regret selling it. Perhaps I'm wrong, but to verify FN had date codes which look like "numbers in a box" stamped on various components and parts.

thanks for the info Falcon! Yes mine looks a lot like yours, the serial number is in the 44XXX range. goes to show that even the big/well established auction houses can get it wrong.

Produced before Nazi occupation. The left side of the slide is marked with the two line address and Browning patent marking as well as various Belgium proofs. Various proofmarks also appear on the left side of the frame and the barrel chamber. Matching serial numbers on the slide and frame. Fixed sights and fitted with checkered walnut grips. Complete with a black leather flap holster with the matching serial number on the back and ink marked "Verbeet" on the inside of the flap, and extra double stack magazine.

One of the newer Hi-Powers offered by Browning. Pretty plain, but a lot of fun to shoot. Bought it three years ago NIB.

I PICKED THIS UP IN 1998 AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WOULD BE A COLLECTOR, I ADDED THE CRIMSON TRACE LASER GRIP AND HAVE PUT A TON OF ROUNDS THRU IT WITH NO PROBLEMS. VERY ACCURATE AND VERY RELIABLE GUN!

I like the look of that stippling on the front & rear of the grip a lot. Does Novak have a name for it?

thanks.

According to the previous owner, the HP has gone through similar package as the Special Ops: http://www.novaksights.com/customguns/BHP/specialops.html

If you just want the stippling, here are the options from Novak:
