View Full Version : Novice Rifle Class Forming

DON AUGUSTINE
04-07-2008, 12:31 PM
On May 25,2008 we will be holding a novice rifle class at the Pala Range.
We will be shooting out to 1000 yards and cover everything a shooter should know to shoot at long ranges and prep for competition. If you plan on shooting any matches, especially the SCPRC, North/South match or the Nor-Cal match, this class will help. By the end of class you will have some great information and will have your ballistics out to a 1000 yards. If interested please pm me and I will give my phone number and answer any questions you might have.
Thanks

Don,

What is the ASL at the Pala range?

Course fee?

Topics covered.

Round Count?

Equipment list?

Distances covered that we will be gather dope for?

DON AUGUSTINE
04-07-2008, 1:09 PM
Elevation is 400'.The cost of the course is $50.00 per person with topics being covered from equipment set up to preping for a match, positions and ballistics. Round count is going to be around 150.Shooter will be able to stay around after the class and use the range. Equipment: rifle ( gas or bolt),150 rounds, eye and ear protection, pad and pen for notes. Not needed but if you have them: rear rest/bag,mat, PDA and any ballistic info or cards that you already have. As I have said we will shoot out to 1000 yards and you will have solid ballistics by the time we are done.

Don, this is such a GREAT idea. Train some so-cal shooters, also to promote the pala range... and get more shooters for NCSA Pala Highpower matches, and other matches!!!

Now.... are they expanding to 1000yds!?

Lastly, since it is shooting uphill, do we need a Badger ACI?

This is a good idea and I highly recommend this to any of you shooting the SCPRC or NOR-CAL Matches this year.

I may attend it myself if I am on track with the SCPRC. Thanks Don for putting this on, it takes time and prep to do these things, $50.00 is very reasonable.

Hopefully there will be paper in their too since there will be paper at the SCPRC. It's recorded document that doesn't lie.

There would probably be a zero'ing exercise during the class (that's my guess).

And... generally, I think a 100yds zero is a good start.... since many folks may not have access to ranges that have much more distances than that.

I don't think so, IMO.

Regular 62gr ammo M855 are probably 2+MOA.

Non-match grade .223's range is probably max at like 500-600yds.

Even match grade 77gr'ers will max out at 800.

Unless you have a 30" barrel, shooting 90gr.... you probably shouldn't be thinking about... 1000yds.

168smk, 175smk, 155scenars will do just fine.

federal gold medal match, black hills, lupua, and corbon are good factory ammunition but they are all pricey. look to spend $1-$2 per round.

if you have serious intentions on shooting precision rifle. reloading is a must unless you have a couple of thousand of dollars to spend every year on match ammo.

The BC on the 75 amax is .435...the same as a 155 amax in 308. You can push them 2900 or so and they do make 1k.

Excellent point.

A lot of people aren't aware that the BC of 22cal bullets has gotten better with the dramatic improvement of bullet designs. The Berger 80gr VLD has a BC of .471. You can easily push the 80gr VLD at 2800fps in a 20" SR barrel. I'm doing it.

If you run the numbers with a Berger 80gr VLD moving at a 2800fps MV, that's a 34 MOA drop from 100 yard zero to 1000 yards and just under an inch of wind drift per 1mph full cross wind. That's going to be nearly the same drop and wind drift as a 30cal 175gr Sierra MK moving at the same MV.

I am certainly NOT saying .223 won't make 1k... nor I am saying that .223 is not "precise" enough...

I was just responding to smogcity's question.... a 20" stag is by no means tight tolerance match grade barrel.... but a regular chrome-lined 1x9....

I just want him to know that all our talks of 77SMK, 75AMAX, 80VLD etc... are for the "match grade" ARs...

I was thinking about something today. Since this class is going to be around a 150 round count should we plan on bringing out out our complete cleaning kits? I usually just take a rod just in case i get a stuck case or something at the range but ive never had an issue and I have also never fired 150 rounds in 1 sitting from my bolt rifle. Also if I have a spotting scope should I bring it or not worry about it?

How does the 168gr compare to 175gr for the ammo listed above? I seem to find the Federal Gold Medal 168gr in stock everywhere but not the 175gr. Hopefully I can just buy it from the poster in Comm Sales/Good deals but if I can't I was wondering if 175gr is worth the 20-40% premium.

And oh, would the Black Hills ammo in the same grain be a better choice than Federal Sierra Matchking? The price works out to the same for 300 rounds in 168gr.

Depending on barrel length, the 168's may not make it to 1000yds and still be supersonic.
The generally accepted belief is that you need 175's to make it to 1000yds without going transonic, especially if you don't have a long barrel.

Prc329
04-16-2008, 1:04 PM
The 168s won't stay supersonic long enough to be accurate at 1000 yards. The 175s are better at it. The 168s will make it but there is a much higher chance the wind will kill you than with the 175s.

rksimple
04-16-2008, 1:05 PM
The 175 will yield slightly better results at ranges under 850-900 yards. At 900 and beyond the 175 stays supersonic, while depending on conditions, the 168 will go subsonic. This makes for a very unpredictable behavior in the bullet. It won't be accurate at those distances. If for the class you are required to shoot to 1k, get the 175's. If you have more money, buy the Lapua 155 scenar factory loaded ammo and save the brass. Or call corbon and see if they have the 155 scenar loading in Lapua brass.

Prc329

With a good coach and good ammo........yes. Maybe not every shot. Hell a lot of seasoned shooters can't do it every time but you will have good people around you helping.

rksimple
04-16-2008, 1:54 PM
Once you get the basics of the rifle down, as well as the "trigger pulling" aspect, 1000 yards is doable. You'll have people helping you with spotting impacts, calling wind, corrections, etc. You just need to be a sponge and soak up everything you can.

For a 26" barrel.

168gr requires about +43MOA elevation to hit 1000yds; @ 1000, 168 will be subsonic... hence accuracy will suffer...

175gr requires about +36MOA elevation to hit 1000yds; @ 1000, 175 will still be supersonic

So, you would need to make sure after you zero your rifle @ 100yds, that they have those elevation range to get you to 1000

PS. if you are not planning to reload, I will buy your FGMM or BHA brass from you...

PPS. knowing the muzzle velocity of the round out of your gun is important... then you can get your ballistic chart ready to know what elevation to start to dial in @ each range.... http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/traj/traj.html

Just take it one step at a time. Did you get that Bushnell in the classifieds?

FlyingPen
04-19-2008, 11:05 PM
I ended up getting the Bushnell in the ARCOM classifieds. I think I got a pretty good deal and they're coming with what seems to be some very nice rings ( http://www.tacticalprecision.com/HRT%20Scope%20Rings.htm ).

I was reading the SPS-Varmint review at Sniper Central and read this:

It is a 1:12" twist barrel which tends to favor the 168gr bullets, which is what we were going to be shooting anyway. We will eventually test the heavier 175gr bullets to see if they stabilize okay, but for this test we did not go over the 168gr bullets.

Review: http://www.snipercentral.com/remspsv.htm

Slightly disappointing that the SPS-Varmint stock isn't free floating. I'm thinking maybe I can sand it down like I did to my Remington 597 to make it free floating.

It seems they did a barrel break in as well. I've heard from so many different sources this is gospel or total bs, I don't know what to believe.

Feeler gauge method won't work on that scope as there is no flat part on the bottom of the scope tube.

I wonder if a bubble level placed on top of one of the turret (with the cap off and the dial recessed) would be feasible. Are there any precise bubble levels that come that small? That will at least get my cross hairs somewhat more horizontal than me eyeballing it. Otherwise, one of those wall hanging laser levels I think could work.

rksimple

You just need to get your rifle level. If you can level the rifle out using the top of the base, lock it down, then put a level on the top of the turret and level the scope, you should be good.

I'm also gonna get a kestrel anemometer for noobie wind reading. I just want to learn some practical long range shooting out to 500. It would be nice to hit 5" plates at 500 with my build. I'm sure the build + scope is mechanically capable of it, I just need to learn how.

Even with a .223, 500 yds won't be a problem and is really not incredibly difficult with a strong foundation. Being that you're about 400 mi here.. you may want to check with Vu .308 to see when he may be putting on another clinic in Sac http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=95177

I would love to get some help on getting it all together correctly with torque wrenches and everything. I was planning to go to Project 2000 to their 100 yard range to get everything sighted in before the class.

The scope and rings are on their way to me right now, I ordered the BRM-S bipod today. I just need to order the base, bipod lock, and sand bag. I'm getting a deal on some Black Hills BTHP ammo which should be by end of this month. Everything seems to be coming together.

This is not specific to Don's class, but here is Timberwolf's list from a class that he taught...

Here is the equipment list for the January class:

Required Equipment:

1. Rifle & Optics – Scoped Rifle capable of 1 MOA accuracy or better. The scope
should have a mil-dot or comparable reticle. The rifle should be zeroed for 100 yards with the ammo you bring.
2. Ammo – 100 rounds of match grade commercial ammo or reloads per day - 300 rounds total. If possible know the velocity of your ammo before hand and try to make a print of a ballistics chart with your ammo.
3. Sling – your rifle must be equipped with a sling that can be used in shooting positions as well as carry. I suggest either a Quick Cuff / M-24 from TIS or a 1907 from Turner Saddlery.
4. Rifle Data Book (w/pen) - If you do not have one and did not get in on the group buy I still have a couple left.
5. Plain notebook and pen – for taking notes
6. Mil-Dot Master or calculator
7. ACI, or slope doper to use in determining the angle of your rifle when taking a shot up or downhill. If you don’t have either that’s fine bring a basic protractor about a foot or so of fishing line and a small slip shot weight and I’ll show you how to make a poor man’s slope doper.
8. Backpack, Ruck, LBE, LBV, or drag bag to carry your gear
9. Chamber flag
10 – Tool kit for your rifle including torque wrench for stock, rings and bases and a sectional rod.

Optional Equipment

1. Bi-Pod – front bi-pod from your rifle. I suggest a Harris swivel type with notched legs either 6-9” or 9-12” depending on your rifle and how low or high your prone position is.
2. Rear Bean Bag or monopod for rifle – rear beanbag is preferable during this class.
3. Elbow and knee pads – I do not recommend the hard shell type, especially in the elbow pads.
4. Shooting mat
5. Blast Pad
6. PDA or 5.11 watch with ballistics software.
7. First Aid kit – I will be carrying one in my gear – however everyone should have a small personal one.

Clothing:

It will be January and we will be at 4000 ft elevation give or take so dress accordingly. We’re all adults so I’m not going to make a list of what to wear except to say that layering is your friend and due to the terrain some type of boot is highly recommended.

Food and Water

Plan on not returning to your vehicle from the time you leave in the morning until the end of class in the afternoon. Pack you chow and any snack you may want. Also I’d suggest that you carry between 2 – 3 liters of water. You can dehydrate just as fast, if not faster, in cold weather as you do in hot.

If you need some help I should be available Saturday afternoon. I have levels and tourque wrenches.

As far as a rear support, as was said before, get a sock, and instead of rice, stop by Michael's Art Supplies and get a bag of the medium plastic pillow beads for about $5.00 (or maybe it was $5.00 because I had a 50% off coupon.) Fill the sock half way and double it over. You should be good to go.

Thanks for the offer to drive, but I'll be going up in my F150.

Is there still room in the class?

Would a Howa 1500 with a 1-4x20 nikko scope work? I'd love to attend, but I don't want to waste my time if the rifle can't handle it. :)

I seriously doubt you will like shooting past 500yds with a 4x scope.

Damn.

What would you recommend?

Something more like a 3-9, 4-12 or 4-16.

Quality is more important than magnification.
A good quality 9X scope will show you more than a crappy 16X scope.

Ahhh, gotcha.

I'll have to sit this one out until I save up for some better glass then.

Thanks. :)

Fill a sock half way full of rice.
Double it over itself and rubber band or sew it shut.

Poly beads (like the stuff they use for beanie babies) work much better. I used rice until I was warned about what happens when things get wet. But yes.. rice or beans can be had at the local market :)

My carpool partner just dropped out.
Anyone in the valley, downtown or the westside want to carpool?
