When receiving a rifle or shotgun do you still have to notify the DOJ by sending in the intrafamily transfer form, or is that for handguns only? My brother-in-law has inherited a shotgun and wants to know what needs to be done legally. I know if you buy a long gun the DOJ supposedly shreds the reg info after 30 days, but if you send in a form its on file till sold or transferred again?
Thanks for the help!

"Intrafamily exemption" and actual inheritance/probate are two separate matters, the former doesn't need anyone to kick the bucket - and the only authorized parties for such transfers are grandparent/parent/child/grandchild.
In both cases above neither an FFL nor any paperwork is required for long gun if both originating & recipient parties are CA residents.
For guns transferred across state lines with formal will/inheritance/probate situation, no FFL is needed either.
Your bro-in-law does not need to fill out any paperwork. He can just go shoot it.
