I clean it after every shooting trip, cheap bulk ammo makes the barrel real dirty

yep when you get back or it stops functioning

of course there is a through cleaning and a once over cleaning

i just wipe off excessive ammounts of crud and maybe 2 patches down the bore

i want my barrel to shoot out, not clean out of commission

Eh, whenever it starts jamming up. I don't shoot real cheap ammo through mine, Wolf Match Target and CCI Mini mags. I find that my chamber gets much dirtier than the barrel does. If I was concerned about the barrel, I'd run a snake through it once or twice and call it good. Followed by an actual cleaning 3 to 4 range sessions afterwards.

967 thousand rounds...

Mine shoots true despite rare cleanings and rough treatment.

when it stops functioning correctly, or prints groups worse than it did a couple boxes ago.

With mine I used to fire 200 rounds at a time with only a quick bore snake through the barrel. I found though around about 2000 to 4000 rounds it would start having fail to extracts and have a good amount of fail to fires after a while. After ruining a few shooting session by having the casing stuck in the chamber, I field stripped it and had a look at the bolt and found there was tons of carbon build up on the extractor and firing pin. Since then I try to field strip it at least every 500-1000 rounds. Oh yeah, all I fire through it is cheap wallmart bulk box ammo.

I'll second his response, I think the 10/22 is still the most fun plinking rifle made.
