View Full Version : Recommend a LA carry knife

So, most of my knives are greater than 3" long. I live in LA and go to school in OC, I'd like a sub 3 inch knife that I can carry all the time without wondering if it's legal where ever I am.

Budget is around $50, but if there's something cool that costs more than that I'd still like a recommendation :D
This is what I'm thinking of right now:

Seems to me you could order a knife with a 3" blade and grind down the tip a little to shorten it just under the legal limit - this would allow you to use the Leek knife for example . . . and widen the scope of available knives for you

Will you carrying at school? I think 2" is max length on college campus. If by school you mean college. Or just leave it in your car.

Nah I don't carry to class (college). I also already have a sub 2" crkt pazoda that I used to carry at community college.

2 1/2" for K-12 and University of CA; no length specified for Cal State or Community Colleges.

But certainly check student code of conduct and related docs/web pages for the school.

Yeah, I think in LA county there is an ordinance prohibiting knives longer than 3"? Not sure but even if not illegal the LAPD does not like it when people carry knives of any kind, especially large folders.

I always see conflicting info about this topic. For example. If it folds, no length limitation, under 3inch OK or under 4inches is OK. Can it be clipped to your pocket and not be considered exposed? I've also read that this is a LA city thing and not the entire LA county....

Anyone have any recent info on the laws?

Both city and county have the 3" limit; general opinion here - no certainty - is that pocket clip is probably 'exposed'.

Interesting on the probably exposed comment. I see people all the time with some sort of blade clipped to the pocket with the knife body held inside the actual pocket.

I carry the Spyderco Squeak at work (K-12) I'm also restricted to non-locking blades.

The other knife I considered was Spyderco's Byrd Tern, but the blade length was to close to the limit (depending how you defined blade length).

I carry the Ontario RAT II. Under 3". Aus 8. Relatively strong liner lock. But it is relatively heavy.

It's big brother (RAT I) being compared to the Tenacious.

Pretty sure the RAT II is right at 3 inches. Otherwise I'd love to carry that, the RAT series are very sturdy knives.

I also already have a skyline, it's greater than 3", and I'm pretty sure the tenacious is more than 3" as well :/ good suggestions though.
Right now I'm just carrying my sog 2.5", I just want something a litttttttle bit bigger.

My favorite EDC is my Benchmade Mini Griptilian, but it's $80-$90.

For $50 or less, you should checkout the Kershaw Cryo. It already comes with a Low Ride clip, so it almost disappears in your pocket.

Haa, just saw that you are already looking at the Cryo in G10, good choice IMO. I have the Kershaw Skyline in Damascus and the flipper on the Kershaws is pretty nice. Plus good bang for the buck too!

I like this model - hawk bill H1 steel

http://m.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=215

While it is under 3" blade length, it looks more like a work tool you forgot to unload before coming to class, work, etc.

Part of staying out of harms way is to look either innocent or clean cut.

Who has a rust proof knife that won't rust???
Fishermen?
Hawk Bill blade- same shape as a carpet cutting knife.

Jimmybacon43

The hawk looks awesome as a tactical blade. I might have to get the byrd version for $20.

darn what was I thinking starting this thread? Now there are like 6 or 7 new knives I want to buy!

i can't understand la/ca knife laws. Can I have an under 3" knife in my pocket unexposed or must I at least show the clip on the pants pocket.

For LA, not supposed to have a knife exposed.

Best guess is visible clip is 'exposed'. (ETA the actual phrase is " in plain view ")

Added that content to the knife laws sticky (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=815906).

Hmm... didn't realize the rule was => than 3". I thought it was > 3".

I'm just going to Dremel off some of the tip and use my new Work Sharp to reprofile the blade.

Or I can just take off the clip so I won't be able to clip it on to my pants and it won't be in plain view.

That gripes me, though. I don't live in LA, but I used to lose my Spydercos before I started using the clip.

In LA county/city you cannot carry an exposed knife if the blade is 3" or longer.

You can legally carry a 14" folder (if you can physically conceal it) so long as it is totally concealed and not exposed.

If you want a pocket clip knife, make sure that it is less than 3" in length. If it is longer, stuff it all the way into your pocket.

That makes no sense at all, but it's CA.

The law was probably in part meant to go after fixed blade knives, which if concealed would be a dirk or dagger (or at least that is my current understanding)

As far as state law goes you can carry a katana if you desire.

I carry with a pocket clip, and though in LA county I don't care. But whenever I go into LA city I slip it off and either put it all the way in my pocket or in a coat jacket

For a while, whenever in LA City (usually a crappy part) I actually carried it IWB in a belly band holster I had tried to use for CCW in Virginia. Also stuck money and certain cards in that thing

This is exactly what I was referring to in my previous post. I'm "assuming" cops don't look hard for knives clipped to pockets because I've never been asked about mine and I always see people with them clipped to the pocket.

BUT I bet if you get stopped for something else it will become a conversation topic and it would be best to be in compliance.

Eh? What model is that? A grind-down? My son has a Thermite and I'd swear it's a 3.5".

I use the Persistence, the Leek and on the odd occasion, the Tenacious, for EDC. The Tenacious is too much knife for me on a regular basis.

For K-12 activities, I also use the Squeak.

For UK carry, I have a completely different set of blades that are legal for carry there and their use is predicated on judiciousness and being able to deploy surreptitiously.

:iagree:

That's my EDC comes right under 3" and fits perfectly into my pocket with a nice axis-assist makes flipping out the blade really easy. It is a bit over the OP's budget, but you won't go wrong with this one.

I live in L.A., I've carried my Spyderco Delica 4 every day for years---2 7/8" blade---one hand opening---belt/pocket clip---I went for smooth blade, serrations too hard to sharpen---I paid $60 back then...

I've lost a few expensive folders so prefer cheap but quality blades now a days. Also, I'm always in and around SF which also has a 3" ordinance as well. The two I'm currently switching between and well under 3".

http://kershaw.kaiusaltd.com/knives/knife/shuffle

http://www.amazon.com/KERSHAW-Glass-Filled-Nylon-Handle/dp/B00BLQWM9O

I bought the Shuffle for under $15 and the 3/4 Ton for $10.

My favorite edc is the Leek line (which I have a few variants of) as mentioned above and always fall back to them regardless of what I am currently carrying at the time. Although, I bought a few of these years back when you could find deals for them for around $20.

Here is it's little brother

It's no Benchmade, but it doesn't carry the price tag either. I feel like you get a lot of quality and some nice features for the price. I know you could get them for less on amazon or another site if you look around. There are also different blade options if you want something different.

Cold Steel Voyager small, its 3", and you cant beat a TRI-AD lock, things are as strong as a fixed blade.

I have a Spyderco drangonfly that I EDC. 2 1/4'' blade length. I got my dad a Spyderco delica and that extra length on that blade really makes a big difference.

I lived in la and went to school in la and been carrying a knife for a long time.. Maybe 4 of the 30+ knives ive carried are under 3.5. I don't even think I have one under 3"

No police has ever given me a hassle about. That cause I wasnt doing anything I wasnt supposes to with it. I acknowledge i have one. pull it out to show and put it away.

I just ordered a custom mini griptilian in neon green. If you get a pre-made color you can find them at about 70.
