I am looking for a Ruger Vaquero with the long snout. 7". Any comments on this? It is for target shooting and defense only.

Sick choice! If you are going to use it for defense though, keep in mind you're at a disadvantage in choosing a single-action revolver. Some people might tell you that single-actions in general are outdated as self-defense weapons. I disagree, but I do think that you're going to have to work harder in terms of practice and training to make up for its deficiencies.

What caliber? I alway feel th 357 is a waste on the Vaquero but I only own the 45LC version. I think the looks of the old Hog Leg would deter most people. There was an article by Bart Skelton, my favorite gunrag writer.

He addresses the issue.

If it is the old model Vaquero then you can load some crazy hot loads for that thing. I'm not so sure about the new one.

i just love the old style Vaquero. The extra weight makes even higher pressure loads feel tame. That thing is just a hoot to shoot.
