As the title says....
Which would you choose and why?

well if this was an all purpose rifle (shooting, maybe some hunting, home defense) then an ak47. rugged and reasonably accurate.

I'd cheat and say AR with as many uppers as I want in as many calibers as I want. That's still just one gun.

Taking all scenarios into account I'd pick an M1A

M1A
FAL
AK
SiG 556 AR
Other AR (please specify)

The Sig556 is not an AR. This poll fails

HA! I'm the first FAL vote!

Rugged, accurate, ssssssssseckssssy, and is one of the most ergonomic rifles ever built.

Love mine, love to have another.

If I could only have one, for what reason?

Killing Zombies?
Keeping in my trunk?
Buying ammo for?
Traveling the world with?
Shooting legally in CA?

I can think of different circumstances for each rifle that would make it most desireable.

The AR is the most versatile, providing different uppers (non "firearms" parts) can be had. Thats my choice.

The OP left out 'Garand' or 'none of the above'

Me.. I'd take a Garand......but.... given a choice of the ones in the list.. M1A as I have oodles of mags and ammo for the 3 I have........

An AR in .308 :-P both for long range (24" upper) and for cqb with a 16" upper I am thinking of building one, or a Remington 700 build with a mcree precision stock...

M1A cause it's the least bastardized of the bunch in CA legal form.

After posting the same poll in other forums, it is interesting how voters in free states chose or voted differently and of course different reasons from us in the not so free state.

I know I didn't add other types like the garand on this poll. I only listed the ones I am particulary interested in.:)

Yeah, yeah, the 556 is not an AR but similar enough and takes the same mags. I had the chance to shoot one of these along with some AR's, of course out of state. The 556 is heavier and felt a bit different from a standard AR but this rifle was really nice to shoot. The trigger was classic Sig, smooth and precise unlike alot of AR's out there which caught my interest. But I still do like standard AR's. M1A is awesome period, and as some other poster mentioned, the "least bastardized" for CA out of the list. I couldn't agree more.

Since alot are asking what it's for, or question is too vague, etc. Let's just say that it's for anything and everything, all purpose. As the question says....if you could only have one. Let's not make this complicated.:)
So you live in the suburbs of a CA city or town. Not necessarily for hunting but just to have a rifle in the collection.

AR15 derivatives are versatile and I like them a little better, but just one rifle? Definitely an AK-derivative (be that RAA Saigas or mag locks for us in CA :( or real AKs elsewhere) - cheap ammo, intermediate power round, low-maintenance, rugged.

Way too vague a question.

One rifle for what purpose, and in what situation?

Hunting, defense, deployment overseas, SHTF, range, competition, etc, etc, etc.

And in what enviornment? Urban, rural, forest, desert, mountains...?

Pick the RIGHT TOOL for the RIGHT JOB.

M1A....i always wanted one but with the price i can get a few AK's and an AR.

AR because as stated in previous posts for its versatility.

Similar to asking...'should I buy the corvette or the pickup truck'. For pure defensive purposes, considering maintainability and availability of parts, I'd take the FAL. If I needed to be mobile all the time, that might change to an AR. For pure survival purposes, probably a savage o/u with .22 on top and 20ga on the bottom.

Not a good poll means not many good answers;)

I am going on the premise and voted as if you don't have access to many other uppers and accessories - you are in a dire situation, absent of extra money, the internet, replacement parts, and the comfort of your home. That is the only way I can imagine that I would be limited to "just one". All know, I prefer to shoot FN FALs, a G3, any AR, M1As, and the SIG 556. I just bought a SIG 556 this week!

However, in view of how I am seeing this poll, that I would be somehow in a last resort case world, limited to just one rifle without any chance at parts, revision, or accessory additions or recoupment, where it must meet as many scenarios as possible: I chose the AK47. ;)
