View Full Version : Black Rifle - AR 15

To everyone and anyone please post a reply so i know my rifle is legal.

So i bought a black rifle, or AR15 through PPT at a gun show and dros it through a local FFL dealer, and picked it up last wednesday.

This is a rifle i had no real intention of buying at the time of sale, but had pondered the thought of owning such a gun, this one caught my eye and so instead of buying another handgun i parted my hard earned cash for a beast of a gun or should i say rifle. Now the former owner had the magazine welded into the lower reciever so there would be know trouble with the law as he put it, as far as i can tell and again i dont no much about these guns but there is no bullet button or prince 50 - maglock what ever they are, but the mag is locked in there. and you can only load it by breaking the gun into its two main parts.

Hmm, were am i going with, this - ok there is a front foregrip mounted on the hand guard, now i was under the impression, that this set up is California compliant - not California legal but COMPLIANT, I have found out that there is a difference and it is some what of a grey area.

Today i visited a gun dealer in Novato Nor- cal the owner there who i am in no way wanting to doubt or dis-respect showed me a Cal- legal (and the only Cal- legal ) AR15 type weapon made by bush master it has a poly-composite fully enclosed lower reciever and magazine, he told me this is the only Cal legal version of the AR15 any thing else is either ILLEGAL OR possibly CALIFORNAI COMPLIANT- the compliant part being that one would have a letter from the DOJ saying that your weapon does comply, well i have no letter to say either and i believe the former owner never had one, and my local ffl dealer drosses loads of these custom built weapons as he did the day i bought mine.

The dealer in Novato told me to becarefull if i take this gun to a outdoor shooting range incase some police officer sees it and decides its illegal in confuguration and build mainly becuse there is a forgrip, is this correct is my gun legal to have this forgrip, when the magazine is locked in permantly , beause im assuming it is legal but now im worried.

Though i have seen many custom built ARs on Calguns that have locked mags and forgrips, - so what is the law on this - please let me know because im dying to take her shooting but dont want to see it taken away from me or have my self taken away, and thankyou everyone who gives me there advice.

What are you selling? You posted in the firearms FOR SALE forum.

Also, if you have an AR with an epoxied mag in (permanently fixed) you got screwed in my opinion. Why buy a rifle that has been permanently altered with epoxy when you could have had a real ar-15 type lower receiver with a standard magazine release and open magazine well and either done a featureless build or a 'fixed' mag build using a prince 50 or bullet button?

Now, to reload your rifle, you have to push out the rear take down pin and load it from the top. That sucks.

Also, I have no idea in the world what you think the difference between CA compliant and CA legal is. It has a fixed magazine. You can put whatever evil features you want on it.

Lastly, the FFL you got your info from has his head up his you know what. You have been here a month already and have over 60 posts yet haven't figured out what 'off list lowers are yet.' Read the newb threads, read the flow chart, read the AK/AR FAQ.

What receiver is it on? (who made the lower)?

This doesn't belong in the for-sale forum.

You're safe with that build, but you should really understand why.

Start with the newbie thread here:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=56818

Then look over this Flowchart and understand why yours is legal:
http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf

Tons of FFLs who want to spread lies continually say, "This is the ONLY legal AR-15" about that bushmaster. It's BS. Their letter means nothing more than the compliance that's built into a properly configured AR-15. They want you to buy their gun. They like to think they know everything.

No worries, believe it or not everyone makes mistakes, even those who are very quick to correct others. ;)

First things first, I'm going to move your thread to the 'Rifles' section where it will get more exposure.

Now as for the rifle, it will help if you can take pictures of it and post them up.
This thread can tell you how to post pictures if you are unfamiliar with doing so.
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=86695

If your magazine is attached with epoxy as you say then you should be able to have as many 'features' as you want without it being an issue.

Post some pictures so people will know for certain what you are referring to and can give better information about the rifle itself.

As for the legal issues I'm sure that you will get better info than I could give you once this is up in the Rifles forum.

lol, when I went to reeds gun shop today, I got into an argument with the sales guy, he was telling me the same crap, ''this is the only configuration for an CA legal AR'' (He didn't even know what a Bullet button or prince50 was) I told him, go and educate your self some more on on the CA AW ban before you make a fool out of yourself, I can't believe how ignorant Gun Sales Reps are. Not only this but, the customer service sucks at reeds as well, I'm never making another purchase there again.

I should add that the former owner did not build the AR him self
it was custom built by Mathewson tool company out of San Jose it is configured to take the 7.62mmx39 round. it has stamped on the receiver Mathewson tool company, thanks

IMHO you're better off using something like the Prince50 Bullet Button, both in terms of usability and in terms of legality.

I gave you two linkes: the AR newbie thread which is chock full of info & the AW ID Flowchart also takes you through the idea.

I'm not sure I would trust epoxy alone. It's also a pain to top-load.

Just curious - does the receiver say anything else on it? I am not as familiar with everything they made, and they have been around for a long time. I know that Mathewson made receivers for other companies, so if it says something like "Armalite" or "Colt AR15" in addition to being rollmarked "Manufactured by Mathewson Tool Company" you would probably have to ditch it.

However, if it just says Mathewson Tool Company AR, AR15, AR-15 or even "Model Petunia" whatever, you'll be OK - it's an Off List Lower. Your prescription for sanity is to ignore the dealer that hasn't a clue, read the FAQ, observe that likley over 250,000 various Off-List Lowers and Off-List Receivers have safely entered the state over the past 2 years, have been built into rifles, and are being enjoyed all over... and as everyone has instructed, put a bullet button on it or Monster Man Grip... and have fun! :)

However, I agree with others that you should post pics! ;)

The receiver has only Mathewson tool company stamped on it.

No reference to Armalite or colt or any over,

Pics will be posted tonight.

IM wanting to take her shooting perhaps next weekend at either richmond or concord out door range and would greatly appreciate hanging out with fellow AR 15 shooters, just need to set up some times and the range, i feel safety in numbers, and i can get educated more on my new baby. thanks

Both of those ranges seem to be "OLL friendly." Only thing I will add is become familiar with ALL the info on OLL's here so you can educate those you encounter that "think" they know what they are talking about.
As far as your gun, the lower can be swapped at a later date if you desire to a BB/Monsterman configuration.

So did you buy a REAL AR-15 or a "clone" built on a off list lower receiver?

Since we live in the same geography I had the OP over and looked at his rifle. I must say the Matheson had the original mag fixed legally in the most peculiar way. They added a set screw behind the bolt catch and notched the mag so it would be caught by the set screw. Ingenious and removable with a tiny screwdriver. I asked the OP to buy a bullet button and we could install it, when it arrived. This is truly an off list lower legally configured on a beautiful set up. The OP is a nice guy to boot. We spent a few hours talking guns and looking at a few of mine.

Ok im getting private messages as to were the pics of this gun are i just had my girlfriend put them up on photobucket now she has gone to sleep and i dont have her pass word so it will have to wait till tomorrow, be patient, by the way im no Photographer and you will not see in the current pics just how Mathewson tool company fixed the mag, as my camera will not focus that close to the tiny hidden screw ( No welding found) besides its going to be a bullet button in the future.
