View Full Version : Is there a better rear sighting option for the Saigas?

I love the cost/performance of them, but hate the sights. Aside from putting optics on there, are there any other options to replace the rear sight (preferrably a rear peep sight)?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thx....

I am sure there is but it might be a headache
if it's not broken don't try and fix it.
leapers has a great quick release ak side mount for $40 I have one on my saiga, then you can install a red dot scope what ever.

http://www.krebscustom.com/PartsPages/KalashnikovParts.shtml You can get rear peep sights here. On my saiga bought the side mount and a red dot which works quite well. Mark

+1 to the Mojo. Run one on my Romy AK, and it's great.

I hate handgun sights on rifles, too.

Thanks for the references guys. Both look like good alternatives.

Ideally, I'd like to have the peep at the rear of the receiver, but I realize the AK-type design just isn't really meant to accomodate this.....

Thanks to everyone!

Krebs is making a rail/rear sight combo that places a rear sight about the tang on the rifle, but it's like $275.

Tech sight makes one for the SKS that may or may not be adaptable to a Saiga. I've not looked to deeply into it myself.

Champion makes adjustable rear sights for AKs, but it's basically just a fancy AKM sight.

I found this looking around, you might want to check with him and see if he's gotten anywhere with it?

No the Tech wont work on an AK...completely different design back there.... The KREBS one will be quality Im sure, but it sounds like a good way to bust a nose, :D J/K of course...unless you like a short LOP like I do (with long arms too...)

I have 2 ideas for this dilemma:

1) Use a G3 or similar rear sight, welded to a modified top cover... If you add metal to the rear of the cover so it sits on the top rails better, the top cover WILL tighten up a lot... Look at GALILs, they are basically AKs w/rear peeps... stiffened rear cover is all it took. The rear sight would be welded on, If you live near a welder Im sure you could get it done fairly cheap. I know I would only ask about $25-30 to do something like that. I need to build an AK so I have a jig lol.

2) Use the quick detach picatinny rail for a red dot scope with some type of back up rear sight on it... or something custom like a FAL (inch or metric, Id try them both) or an AR or maybe G3 again....

Since the front sight goes up and down and left/right, the rear doesnt really NEED elevation adjustment, just windage, as long as you get it close...this is where an AR type sight would rule the day IMHO

I really wanna build an AK in 556 using an AR front sight block welded to the gas cylinder (to get the height perfect for the back sight), and a G3 rear sight on the top cover with a SAIGA stock and FCG, SAIGA hand guard and no top handguard with a GALIL to AR mag adapter permanently welded to the receiver... Id prefer to use a Yugo 556 kit with the RPK style heavy receiver and a cut down RPK barrel (13.5" ish with a permanent AK74 brake) Id also like to try to add a G3 style (custom made tho) cocking lever at the gas tube and a FAL safety lever assembly and eliminate the AK safety all together (fill in the top cover too) or worst case, do a left hand conventional cocking handle which is much easier to concoct....

That would be a kick arse CA legal AK....

Wait what was the question?? :D:TFH:;)

I wanted to add this.... look real close at the front sight :cool2:

I had a small hand in making this work out... I hand reamed the inside of the gas block and also hand turned the piston down (it takes a little off set to the piston/head/shaft diameter to make it work right another Calguns patron did the final install and the beautiful finish worK... Use THIS front sight with an AR rear sight...A1 most likely...Shoot I dunno...
