In my research it seems my choices are
1. ak RAA saiga never shot one
2. ar many say ar-15 take alot more maintenance than a ak & also ak's seems to work wet, dry dirty whatever. this true? I have shot an ar-15 before an really liked it

what would be your 3rd recommendation?

semi auto, defense, SHTF , .223 or higher

thanx

What is your budget? Is this weapon only for SHTF? Or multi purpose? If price wasn't an issue to me, the next weapon I would add to my arsenal would be a socom 2, but I don't have $1,600 at the moment. lol I have had a few ak's love them. Some people say they arent too accurate, but I have been pretty accurate with mine. I like them because they will eat any bullet you load, they are low maintenance, and will work after they've been dragged through hell and back. In a SHTF situation that I had to bug out and I could only take one weapon, the AK would be my battle rifle of choice. I love AR's but I personally like more knock down power, and in case I needed to hunt. When I first got into guns, my first was a mak 90, then a shotty for home defense, then a side arm. You'll get the bug, firearms are like tattoos, once you get one, you gotta have more. It an addiction!

my 3rd choice would be a FAL
it fires a nice sized round and it just looks plain cool

SKS's are cool but I'd rather have an AK and that's already on your list

And sure an AR needs to be cleaned, but it will out shoot an AK at range every time.
I'd have an AR if I already didn't have two rifles that shot 7.62x39
I'm trying to stay in the same caliber for now. That way I only have to buy one type of ammo.

I wish I could say FAL, but with the laws in CA I'd say M14 or clone. Heck, even a Saiga 308.

I would put AR before AK, too -- just because the SHTF situation is so small you're better off building the rifle you want (not to mention the AR is WAY less finicky than people claim).

M1 carbine. You can run 30 round magazines if you already own them and no BS laws to annoy you. Easy to shoot also.

+1. I have an AR, garand, sks, remington 700. But the m1 carbine is super lightweight, legally utilizes high cap mags, the ammo is relativly lightweight to carry, and follow-up shots are cake. Plus its the most unassuming-looking gun ever, especially compared to ARs and AKs.

The socom and other m14 variants are freakin sweet and I REALLY want one, but a fully loaded 20rd mag is heavy as a brick.

No one said Shotgun?
Every gun owner should have atleast one of each;
-Semi/Revolver Pistol (>9mm)
-12ga shotgun (870 or 500 or better)
-Rifle caliber in 7.62 or greater.

optional, but pretty much must;
-SKS
-Mosin
-AR-15 variant

I have never owned a SAIGA in particular but I would take the M1 carbine over an AK series for everything except going into World War IV on the planet Venus. The AK has great penetration but the M1 is lighter, does follow up shots faster, and has 30 round legal mags (if you own them.)

The 308 SAIGA does not have pre-ban mags, and I imagine follow up shots suck.

I don't know I'm not an expert, I just know that the M1 carbine feels fun and comfortable to shoot more than anything else to me. :)

AR & AK cant do.

My goals.

Rifle for very accurate range firing & appleseed meets.
Ruger 10/22?

shoots cheap ammo, good gun to have for female friends?

Defense SHTF
M1A socom?
want the more powerful .308
but weary of its size & weight (shtf setting IMO one should have something light mobile compact BUT powerful) *yes, i am getting a shotgun also! :)

I was thinking about using my M1a for SHTF too. Then I stopped eating Twinkies and the thought went away.
Now I'm thinking about using the .338 when eating cup o noodles.

You should look into something like this: http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=1677&cat=1609

For SHTF, my third choice is a semi-auto M2 50 cal mounted on a 1974 datsun pickup. Very Mad Max if I dont say so myself. LOL. Just Kidding....really.....:)

I think everyone should have a durable service rifle (AK)
and accurate service rifle (AR)
and a longer range/ heavy hitting rifle (308 AR/Fal/HK91)

You should also have a concealable pistol and a shotgun.
a .22 rifle is always good for some light hunting.

Or you could always go back to my first suggestion up top. :)

Enjoy
