What is the best place to buy powder and primers around Davis? Hunting and stuff in Vacaville seems to be one of them but the customer service is the worst so I'm trying to avoid them.

They are great, I get a lot of my supplies there. Their prices are about 20% cheaper than most other places and their customer service people are very pleasant, in my experience.

I used to buy my suplies from Rancho Cordova Guns & Ammo. Right off of Zinfandel, hwy 50, I think. I don't know if they still carry reloading supplies, or even if the store is still there. You should call them first. Good luck and let us know how you fare!

There is also the shooting gallery in Vacaville, they don't have as large a selection has Gun Fishing and stuff. It's a little closer to Davis though.

But...

They are always out of something. I went to get some Tight Group and HS6 the other day and had no luck. They have been out of Tight Group for a while now. They did have some 9mm Dillon dies in stock which was great.

Call before you go but expect to be passed around on the phone. Not very many people there know much about reloading.

This has been my experience with them.

Rancho Cordova does sell some reloading supplies and often stocks Bear Creak Moly pistol bullets. Call them to see if they have what you need.

+3 biggest selection I've found so far in the area, prices not bad either. You have to get the right person to ask reloading questions but there is help there. They are out of stuff sometimes which sucks but usually it's not for long before it's restocked.

Rancho is still open and carry a small selection of stuff. Nothing like the Sportsman's Warehouse though. I don't go to the Rancho place anymore, last visit there the guy claimed OLL's were illegal and I was violating the law constructing one. Guy was a real jerk. They also seem to carry nothing but single action pistols too which sucks unless you're 80 yrs old.

Yeah Thats going to be the best place. Doesn't matter if their service sucks as long as I can find what I need. Thanks guys.

Sportsman Warehouse in Rocklin has some good prices,
but you have to know what your buying.

The Bullseye Powder I purchased today was a great price.
It was $16.50/lbs.
The CCI Small Pistol Primers $27.99/thousand was sorta high.
The Lazer cast .38 cal lead 158gr SWC/500rds was $59.99.

What's nice there was when the staff told me to show the
cashier my ID Badge, since they give a additional discount if
your Police or Fire.

It's tough finding components in small quantities. The best thing you can do is get in on some of the group buys to powder valley. I think Frank has one going on (from Irvington arms). Unfortunately the buy is centrally located in Fremont and that's a bit of a drive from Davis.

In the past I got together with 4 or 5 people and placed my own large "stock up" order with Powder Valley. I've also compared prices and shipping with T&T reloading, Wideners, and a few other places. Sometimes shopping around netted a slightly better price. Generally though you get a pretty good deal out of PV even with hazmat and shipping.

Guns, Hunting, and other stuff has moved their reloading section to the basement and it supposed to be getting well stocked for that. I was there last month when they made their move, and the stock of stuff was low, but I think they had just moved everything and it was in flux. Their prices are a little higher than getting things in bulk from PV, but they are reasonable for convenience. A few bucks for a brick of primers (1000) is negligible when you factor eventual cost. It's still cheaper than buying factory ammo.
