Depends on which ones they are. I doubt he is Big Five and besides the thread crapping rules don't apply to money grubbing corporations! :D

Auto Ordinance sells brand new M1 Carbines, with parts that are interchangeable with GI parts, for less than $1k!

Which manufacturer??

The one at my local 5 was an Inland, which it what I've heard from others. They only had one, but claimed the warehouse near by had over 100. I asked if they had any idea of other manufactures, or if I could hand select, and was told he didn't know, but probably not.

I had to show the kid how to operate the bolt hold open, so he could hand it to me (I guess it's policy that they have to have the bolt locked back before they can hand a gun to a customer - at least they teach a little handling safety)

The one at Lakewood store was Inland, not in great condition. I do not really agree with the way they are doing the paid in full special order thing. You start the DROS and they recieve the gun about a week later, so you spend the $1k and you don't get to see the actual rifle you will be getting.

can you do a dros without a serial number?

For long guns, yes. I do it almost every time :)

Only info that's submitted on the DROS is # of long guns. No make, model, serial #, etc.

I don't know how they could sell any of these. For 1k+ (rack condition) Id better be getting an Irwin Pederson. If you think of it the price is closer to 1,100 when you factor in tax, DROS, and most people hae to purchase a lock. For that price you could buy 2 CMP carbines a case of ammo and pay range fees for a whole lot of shooting.

Does Big 5 price match? Maybe you could walk in with a CMP flier and and walk out with a $450 rifle.

When conducting a DROS on a long gun, a serial number is not required.

I've checked out the ones at my local big 5. All junkie and beat to death. At least they are selling them. They always claim they sold a bunch already, ;)
I'll wait til they reduce the price about $500.

Oh yeah no special order BS at my local Big 5. You buy the one on the rack as they only have one.

I just checked out the M1 Carbine (inland) at a store in San Diego (Kearny Mesa to be specific). The stock was really beat up. The hand guard was not too bad and was two rivet. Flat bolt. Muzzle looked ok but bore needed a good cleaning, was pretty dark. Serial number was 600k, with an 8/43 inland barrel. Parkerizing was pretty nice and alot better than I had expected after reading alot of the posts on these. The import mark (Century Arms int.) was on the bottom of the barrel, in front of the bayonet lug and pretty small. Strangest thing though was that the serial number was mechanically electropenciled on the top of the receiver, parallel and next to the bolt.
