I recently acquired a new (to me) Remington 700 rifle. Initially it was represented as a Custom Shop build from 2000 or 2001. It's chambered in .223, has a 26" composite barrel with a steel barrel liner. I checked with Remington Custom Shop, and gave them the serial number. Their response was it was NOT built by the Custom Shop. I called Remington CS, gave them the serial number and they told be it was a 2000 build 700 VS. She didn't really have any more information than that and suggested I go to their website and look at the specs for a 700 VS. That should tell me whatever I want to know. REALLY?

I found a magazine review of this rifle, but not detailed information other than referring to the rifle as a 700 VS Composite:

Here are a few pictures. I'd like to hear from anyone that knows more about it than what I've been able to discover.

It likes 50 grain bullets and shoots a ragged hole at 100 yards, dislikes 75 grain buletts and is all over an 8 inch circle at 100 yards. My suspicion is I've got a 1 in 12 twist. I need to spend time at distance to see what it will do.

use a cleaning rod with a tight mop to measure twist. Mark it with painters tape, pull it down the length of the barrel and count the turns. The berger 70gr VLD might work in it.

Was going to suggest the same thing.
