My friend recently had a Remington 700 custom built with a 24" heavy barrel I believe 1/11 or 1/12 twist 30-06 chamber.
He has a $500-600 budget for a scope he plans on using for med 400-600m and a little long range shooting 700-up to 1000.
optic recommendations?
Maybe mil dot with BDC?

Swfa 3-15, vortex 4-16 or 6-24x.

Several low end glass offerings out there for his budget. Glass isn't exactly top of the line but they all have good features for the budget restricted. They'll get him on target time and again.
Vortex - Good reticle options
Bushnell Elite - Great entry level
Super Sniper SWFA - Built like a tank

+1
It seems like the vortex 4-16 with the nice reticles is just out of his budget tho.
The vortex 6.5-20x50 with mil dots is even below 500 and is clear enough glass. Not built the same.
In that exact price range its a hard decision.

I have a Bushnell Elite Tactical 1500 5-15x on my Remington 700 .30-06 and it works fine so far.

Off topic, but with all these help me pick a scope threads, I'm thinking we need a sticky.

Why? Different scopes for different folks.

ok.... now I understand. I will say building this rifle wasnt as easy as a 308 or 300 win mag would of been. had to custom order the 30-06 barrel and wait 6 mo.

Try find a lightly used Leupold VX-3 on eBay or Gunbroker.

I poked at a friend's Vortex 4-16 and it was really quite nice. A bunch of useful features and well designed functionality.

30-06...?!?

Isn't that the round that that piker Carlos Hathcock favored?

There must be a shinier cartridge out there than that old thing... you know, somethin' w/ a bunch of alphabet-soup letters in the name?
