Looking to re-chamber a remington long action. Its in 300 RUM but I want a caliber better suited to deer. Id prefer the 243 wssm but i think it is too short for the long action. I could be wrong.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Also looking to not burn through barrels as well:facepalm:

The problem with the 243 wssm is the necks are 0.020 thick on factory brass. If you load this round down the cases will collapse on you.
Sure you can turn the necks to 0.012 thick to avoid this but that requires a new reamer so the chamber isn't sloppy after you turn the necks.
The factory also seated the heavy for caliber bullets really deep so they would feed reliably. You get decent performance out of the light bullets at the expense of the heavier bullets.
If it was my gun I would chamber it in 300 WSM but if that doesn't work for you swap out the bolt to a 0.473 and make it a 25-06 or 6mm Remington

Can you do a weatherby? 257 weatherby is like God's laser beam for deer.

What about a 25-06?

+2 for the 257 Weatherby if you don't care for that do a 25 WSM/25 pronghorn and there is always the 6.5-STW

Thanks for the replies guys I really appreciate them.

I love the 25-06 but I have a magnum bolt face. If I could that's what I would choose.

I posted 300 H&H because it's in between 30-06 & 300 Win Mag's power.

I have a 300 ultra

I don't want a 7mm. Trying to fill the gap between my 243 and 300 ultra. I want one of the smaller mags.

Is brass available for that?

I don't know much about the STW except one of my friend's had a 7mm STW Sendero. Other calibers are probably necked down from it.

YEP! all of the STW are based off the 8 mm. the 6.5 is a screamer but if it's just for hunting you'll never burn it out, on your other question yes a 6.5 has better BC than that of a 25 but the 257 Weatherby will reach out and get-em with authority!

Toby thanks buddy. The 6.5 stw sounds great. What's the round count average for that round 2k?

The weatherby sounds a bit than I want. If I need authority I'll just use the RUM. I plan on using it in Alberta next year. Uncle lives there and said deer are pushing 300lbs there.

257 weatherby has a 300 yard zero then drops like only 4" at 400 yards

I think I'm gonna go with the 264 win mag since I can use 7mm brass and run it through a FL die.

There is very little data here and nothing that the cartridge should be using it's a 120-140 grain bullet caliber. this is a cool site to visit.

I'll have to check some books to see if they have any. This stuff is so much work figuring out what's fits me.

Will it work with a magnum bolt?

I have a 257 Weatherby reamer if you like that idea...

My guess would be that you start getting fliers around 750 rounds with a 6.5 STW because the 7 WSM's usually only last around 900 rounds and they burn even LESS powder than an STW based cartridge...

I'd have picked 257 Bee myself, too.

Top tuna if you are looking for better barrel life possibly look into 280, 280 ai, 6.5x55, 284, 30-06. They all get much better barrel life then their magnum counterparts. If you need a standard long action 308 bolt face, i have a new bolt ill trade it for magnum bolt face. That way if u wanted u could build a non magnum long action rifle.

OR.......

technically......

If Toptuna is a handloader, he can download a medium bore magnum and take advantage of the bolt face AND get better barrel life. 416 rem mag, 338 rum, 375 H&H, even 458 rem mag. Download with H4895 and cast bullets and they would all make a fine deer cartridge. The barrel and brass life could be pretty well unlimited.

Just an idea :)

or..... technically..... :)

if Toptuna were so inclined, he could make a 50 razorback short, and have his own personal wildcat using RUM brass. A long action with a mag length of 3.6" (rum), designed to use 50 BMG bullets (1.6" NTC) would need brass length of 2". Cut to 1.75", I'm guessing you can mag fit 750 grain amax bullets.

Plenty of powder capacity to launch a 750 grain bullet to 1050 fps.

It would be quiet. Because the hole in the barrel is .510 at the grooves, the barrel would be light (you can also use a short barrel since velocity isn't the goal). low velocity, so low recoil. So, quiet, shoots cheap m33 ball, lead-free available, low recoil, light rifle. cast bullets available too, you could treat it like a 50-70.

Would use 50 alaskan dies which are cheap and easy to find.

a 650 grain bullet trucking along at 1000 fps wouldn't damage too much meat, methinks. I bet you'd be able to eat right up to the 50 caliber hole.

Ballistics would be neat. the 750 grain amax would still be trucking along at 950 fps at 500 yards. The drop would be pretty severe though, not the flattest cartridge. a BDC dial scope could help for that.

Just an idea :)

+1 on the 264 Mag if you are already have the magnum bolt face. Fun cartridge, reasonable component availability, and 6.5's are wonderful in the wind.
