Deactivated guns to be banned by end of 2008
1 day ago
LONDON (AFP) — The government said Thursday that it plans to ban deactivated firearms by the end of the year after a huge increase in the number of model and pellet guns that have been converted to fire live ammunition.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced the ban during a visit to Liverpool where 11-year-old schoolboy Rhys Jones was shot dead in August 2007 as he walked home from playing in a game of football.
The unprovoked murder shocked the nation and Smith said the ban would protect the public and give police the power to remove the 'black market' firearms.
The police believe there are an estimated 120,000 deactivated weapons in circulation across Britain.
The government look set to reclassify them as replica guns, which are already banned.
"Tackling gun crime is key to making people feel safer and more secure in their communities. We already have the tightest controls in Europe but there is more we can do to remove the threat of gun crime," she said.
Gill Marshall-Andrews of the Gun Control Network said: "We are delighted. This has been on our agenda for a long time. It is a big loophole in our firearms legislation."

That's lame, I hope they're not banning deacts that people bought a long time ago.
Heres a site I admire for it's photos. Some of them have a lot of history.

Yeah but the way they deactivate the guns over there makes them reasonably easy to put back into operation again. They basically weld up the chamber, and weld the bolt to the bolt carrier, and thats it. (ETA: they might also cut the locking lugs off the bolt)
Their deactivated guns don't compare to our "dummy" gun requirements at all.

True, the receivers are intact! I can never get over that big difference, those British guns are hardly "deactivated" when the whole gun is still in one piece.

I believe ammo is also highly regulated there too, like needing some kinda of license to by as well, so maybe lots of reloaders over there too? :gunsmilie:

Reminds me of when I visited the Palace Guards museum in London. They had a display of some of their trophies from Indo-China. They had an SKS with a horribly welded up bolt and muzzle. They made no attempt to grind down the lumps. It looked like a first day attempt from a prison welding school. The kicker was that they labeled it "AK-47":kest:

i sure would like a conversion that allows it to fire dead ammunition
sometimes i am like let the brits suffer for all the pain their misadventures had caused the world they once ruled.

if these dumbasses could stop blackmarket firearms they would be doing right now. just like california, stop the legal purchase and that will stop criminals from getting them. you know california sets the standard for gun control in the u.s, but they just get their ideas from england. a country we rebeled from.
