Tactical / Precision Rifle Match
Jan 26, 2008

A Place to Shoot in Saugus, CA will be having its first Tactical / Precision Rifle Match of 2008 on Saturday, January 26, 2008. Registration will begin at 0700 and the first stage will begin at 0730. The match should run until approximately 1200.

The match will consist of approximately five or six different courses of fire (depending on time and number of participants) and will be a combination of precision shooting and tactical application and the ranges will vary between 100 and 900 yards. There will be a combination of reactive targets, paper and steel that range is size from 1 MOA to 3 MOA for the given range depending on the course of fire.

This match is primarily designed for the Precision Bolt Action Rifle, however, if you own a hunting rifle or semi-auto with good optics and feel capable of its performance and accuracy, feel free to participate.

There is some movement during the stages, and targets will be engaged from various field positions in whatever shooting position is necessary to insure a clear shot and in some cases concealment while taking the shot.

The fee for the match will be $25.00 for early registration, $30.00 for match day walk-ons. Plaques and certificates will for awarded to the top three finishers and a medal will be awarded to the top shooter in the 100 - yard dot drill. This is limited to 20 competitors so pre-registration is suggested. If you’re interested in registering or have any questions either PM me through this forum or email me directly at billerwin@msn.com.

i'll go and hangout, but i'll probably not shoot in the match. i'm still in the middle of load developing, and don't know my dope yep. i'm trying to bring my velocity down a little, and see where my accuracy is at.

HEy PETE hows your rifle shooting? Im at 125 rounds threw mine, and i just found a great load to shoot 1 holers.

PistolPete75
01-10-2008, 10:59 PM
i can shoot 1/2 moa no problem, and it was on my first load. i'm running a little fast i think, cause my i'm having to do less adjustments than b4. i think i'm going about 2700-2725fps, and want to bring it down to about 2650fps. i know 168s drops accuracy at 2700fps, so i think i can bring it down to .3moa-ish. my round count is about 150rounds. barrel is just about broken in too.

and yes, i do love my rifle. i just wish uso would hurry up. called them, and they are running late on my scope. it should be end of next month. hope they stick to it.

Oooo..... Ive been thinking once my new 308 and 7wsm are done, saving for the 3.2-17x Ergo/ERGO, Erik, GAP retical, Red and green (i think you can do dual) 35mm TUbe. I just want the AO, I think it looks better then the SF. But I love the canadian, and might get one some day!

i saw that. the main issue is the 1/2moa elevation knob. if i was going moa again, i would definitely want to stick with 1/4moa knobs. he screwed up when he spent the money on the erek knobs but did it in 1/2moa. great for shooting large targets, but not the best for precision work. bet you that's the reason why he wants to dump his scope.

You know what I wish was more part of shooting culture? Betting! I think it's just a pool player inside of me talking. Haha.. no.. i'm using a sling.
I think the benefits of a sling only diminishes as the weight of the rifle decreases, that is to they they are proportional. When PROPERLY using a sling, I believe that accuracy can be improved by 30% when quantified if I remember correctly.

Even with light rifles, when employed properly, you can get much more than 30% returns. Ask anyone who shoots prone unsupported or any highpower guy. I would have never believed it had I not been shown.

The sling isn't there to help support the weight of the rifle, but to help unitize you and the rifle, weight aside.

I'm going to the range tomorrow to check the conditions, fill a few sandbags, and prep for the match.

As a note it appeaars that the road is closed to the north (Lake Elizabeth side) due to snow over the pass (above Green Valley) so entrance will be from the south (Santa Clarita side). I assume most if not all of you come from the Santa Clarita side but on the off shoot . . . Anyway the snow level will be rising on Friday so hopefully they'll reopen the pass so that I don't have to drive all the way to Santa Clarita then up.

The height of the centerline of the scope is a factor in trajectory compensation.
Run drop cards with both scope height settings and compare.
The difference is slight, but it's there.
Most differences will be in the 0-100 ranges.

Don't play with ring heights.
Play with bc to make it match.

I use quicktarget and it's spot-on if the right bc and velocity are used.
I'm talking less than 1/4 MOA all the way to 835 where I have hard dope.
Quicktarget allows for inputting ALL the BC's where JBM is running off just ONE BC number right?
Nayt's Nightforce software should also be running all the BC's and that's probably why it's working.

I have not found any of the single BC programs to work as well as the multiple BC programs.

It comes with bullet data pre-loaded right?

Quicktarget does, but I checked the Sierra website and updated Quicktarget to the right BC's as the original Quicktarget BC's were on the low side.
Once I corrected quicktarget and re-ran my range card, it was a dead match to the prior day's numbers aquired by shooting paper and steel.

If it's matching at 1,2,3,5 & 8, it's gotta be safe at all intermediate ranges between those too. :)

Nayt-

If you are going up the 405, can you pick me up on the way?
All my other shooting opportunities for the weekend seem to be canceling due to people wimping out.
I gotta shoot something every weekend...

WIMPS!

At our Norcal matches, if it rains, Vu still makes us shoot from in the mud.

I agree!

I'm really sick too.
I took 3 days off work in the last 7 days.
I have been to the doctor and I am currently on antibiotics.
I'll be there, but don't give me a hard time if I wear out quickly and hide in the truck.

Ask Timberwolf about how I was on sunday.
(Bill- I normally have a lot more stamina ;))

Its going to be wet and muddy anyway - nobody will notice . . . besides we have "gumps" stratically placed - hell I might even design a couple of COFs to allow you to shoot out of them while you're "relaxing" :D

Too bad not everyone can tough it out like you. You the man. Everyone else is either sick *ahem*, suddenly has to go to work, or all of a sudden doesn't have a rifle. You know who you are! :43:

Thanks Joe. :)

Next time, take turns grabbing brass for your buddy as it flies off the trailer. ;)

so what kind of stages did you guys run?

As I remember it...
Stage 1: 3 shots bipod prone, descending score on the Buff @ 860
Stage 2: 3 shots slung kneeling, descending score on an 8" plate @ 255
Stage 3: 3/4" 5-dot drill, bipod prone @ 100
Stage 4: 1 shot from each of 3 positions: 4x6 plate bipod prone @ 130 then Buff at 380 kneeling behind a barricade with barricade as support then again from over the top of the barricade.
Stage 5: 3 shots descending score from the back of the moving trailer at the tall 125yd plate
Stage 6: Walk up the creek to the shooting position and put one shot on the Maiden @ 391 from any improvised field position.
