Was searching for something or other on the net and came across a website called democraticunderground.com.

Started snooping around and came across a interesting thread regarding gun control, Heller and its possible influence on the presidential race;

This is an interesting view...

If the Supreme Court rules against DC and finally agknowledge the Second as an individual right then our candidates can say "yes, I supported gun control, but I no longer have the option to do so". It will become the untouchable non-issue it always should have been.

Not gonna happen that way, but interesting nonetheless :)

Pretty good info on the candidates. Seems to be accurate and un-biased.

CNN - Election Center: Candidates stance on Gun Rights (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/issues/issues.gun.html)

I have been saying for several years now that gun control is (outside of San Francisco and Los Angeles, anyway..) a loser of an issue for Democrats. The AWB was largely responsible for the tide that sucked the Congressional Democrats out to sea in 1994. They have not forgotten this. Their gains in Colorado the last go-round are due to their candidates being uniformly pro-gun.

IMO political pragmatics will play significantly on this issue, especially with Clinton. She saw firsthand the political carnage the AWB wrought in her husband's first term -- she won't make the same mistake.

All the signs point to a longer period of perceived "detent", i.e., support for the individual right but with "reasonable" legislative restrictions -- once the SCOTUS rules on Heller -- but that will translate into very real, and tangible, gains for us pro-gun folks.

Just look how fast the Dems shut down the ban nuts after Virginia Tech. The only thing that came out of it was a bill that the NRA supported.
