I think I would have stayed in the house if all I had was a 22 and there was a mountain lion in the back yard. Maybe it was a .223...

I'm surprised the comments on the news site are pretty positive. I thought it'd be full of hippies and PETA nuts screaming about the mountain lion...

Many people hunt mountain lions using a pack of dogs and a .22 pistol. She wasn't under gunned, just under dogged! BTW, GOOD FOR HER!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe you about the pack of dogs but I have to assume you are joking about the 22 pistol...

Beware the old woman with her lowly .22; she probably know how to use it!

Haha! She wanted to mount the lion! Seriously, that lion is hers. She should have cooked it up and eaten it, kept the head for a mount. You keep what you kill, I say.

Haha she wants it back so she can have the thing mounted!

gets an easy 9 inches in balistic gelatin tests. rifles get up to 14 inches. the 22lr is not the joke many people seem to think it is.

No, you don't need anything bigger and you don't want to ruin the hide.

Some of those people commenting are total idiots.
"She had to time to go inside, why didn't she just bring her dog inside?"

WTF? Over

Has that person ever tried to get an unruly dog inside the house with a 120 lb cat attached to it's back? Ain't nearly anyone alive gonna pull that stunt off, let alone grammaw.

"It's not a real lion, it couldn't kill you"

Double WTF? Over

Ask all the recent people killed by pumas what they think about that idiotic statement.

How did the lion escape from the wild?

Sometimes, there are no words powerful enough to describe just how stupid someone is...

I would shoot the mountain lion as well if it was going after my dogs but if i saw one just walking across my property i wouldn't freak out.

Here are some great quotes from her in other papers:

"I shot him in the light spot under his leg where I knew his heart would be," Smith recalls. "You do what you have to do - you don't have time to be afraid."

"A gun is no good unless its loaded," says Smith.
"Well I'm not a grandma but I am 80-years-old and there's no reason you can't take care of yourself at 80," says Smith.
