And it took all my might to stop myself from buying it. It's flippin nice! I already have one rifle too many to fit in my already jammed safe.

Does anyone have one of these yet?

They told me that each store location got one rifle. Currently only in 223/556.

The rifle is pretty sweet. Fiber optic front sight, Williams rear sight, picatinny scope rail, interesting synthetic stock, flash hider. The gun is all-black, even the bolt is coated. The bolt on the gun I handled felt smoother than on my Predator.

If I wasn't already picking up a different rifle I'd have bought it. Price was $579.

Are these good rifles? How do they compare to other bolt action rifles (remington 700)?

I dont know much about bolt action rifles but I think my next rifle will be a bolt action longer range rifle?

That is awesome they have it in! One of the first places in CA where there have been confirmed sightings!

My bad, at work, thought it was regular MVPS.

In what why do the predator and patrol differ? I dont know much about either but I think I heard or read 1 or 2 bad reviews on the predator? Opinions on both?

G&A mag had a good review of the patrol. 223 bolt gun that takes your AR mags...I am in on this one. The patrol has iron sights and a muzzle device plus the ability to add an optic on top...all good things IMO.

Predator has a wood stock, no irons and an non-threaded barrel. The patrol is more like a synthetic version of the Ruger Scout rifle in 5.56.

I saw the Predator at a shoot last year. The guy who had it did very well in the long range portion against others who had semi-autos. Personally, I would prefer the wood over the cheapie synthetic in a bolt action.

The Patrol has a lot going for it. Compact, takes AR mags, chambered in 556, iron sights, full scope rail, etc. It as tactical as one can get in a bolt action rifle without sacraficing anything.

I've had the Predator for almost a year and its shooting one hole groups with cheap russian ammo at 100 yards. Show me another rifle that will do this. A rifle that's this accurate is just so impressive to shoot. I can't explain it other than recommend you try one for yourself.

I was thinking about buying the Predator, which can be had for for under $500 at Big 5 (due to the 20% coupon)..

what's wrong with no iron ? don't you always put on a scope on these anyway ?
what's the point of threaded barrel ? do bolt action ever need flash hider or a compensator ?

The MVP series seem like neat rifles. What they need is make a series in 7.62x39 that takes AK mags...

Have an MVP Varmint 24" fluted and that thing is a TACK DRIVER at 100 yards. I've gotten .325" 3 shot groups. .5" 5 shot groups regularly as well with Hornady 52gr V-Max. All of the cheap reloads from BVAC, Freedommunitions, Factory Hornady, all pretty much shoot the same. I haven't heard a bad thing from any decent shooters and I am a MOD on the MVP Forum. I hear about all the MVP's over there.

Yes! I've been saying this since I first learned of them.

These are good with only one "issue", the bolt. After firing the trigger the bolt is heavy to lift and it's not what I consider smooth. This is the only compromise in these rifles. If you want a smooth operating bolt this gun won't be for you.

i got to hold and work the action of a predator but not a patrol. the predator to me felt kinda cheaply made and the bolt wasn't that smooth. didn't get to shoot it. not sure if its the same for the patrol.

Oh let me say I believe it'll smoothen out in due shooting time. I can shoot mine pretty fast when a rhythm is built up. A tiny bit of oil and some practice will get ya there quick.

I work mine no problem. It's just not smooth and cocking the firing pin on the bolt lift needs some force but its doable. It's just not anywhere near as nice to work that bolt as my other rifles.

I hear ya it definitely has some stick to it. If you find another way to smoother it out let us know!!!

I've been interested in the MVP Patrol before it was even announced. Essentially I wanted a "Scout" configuration in 223. I thought for sure I was gonna run out and buy one when they first announced it.. but now I'm torn on whether to get one or a Scout rifle in 308.

There are already plenty of 308 scout rifles out there but I don't see the draw to thiscalibers. My first choice would be 7.62x39 and it's a fraction of the cost. My 2nd choice is 223/556. 308 forget it!

I've had one of these on order at my LGS for six months now. I'm glad to hear they are showing up in stores. Perhaps it won't be that much longer then I'll have mine too.

Many ranges around here don't let you shoot the cheap 7.62. Otherwise that'd be a top pick for me as well. On top of that.. Russian surplus ammo is starting to show its finite stock. Buying American 7.62 is expensive. In a semi-auto, I'm not too interested in 308, but in a bolt action where you're taking your time for every shot, its worthwhile to launch a bigger bullet on top of the amount of powder one can load.

Run some factory Superformance, or some 55gr V-Max rounds. Those are shooting 1/2" all day, and on a good condition day, .325" moa 3 shot groups. 5 shot, still well under half inch groups. Break it in real good with cleaning, shooting, cleaning, shooting etc, and have at it. Mine's shooting REAL well. I am not going to touch anything else on it unless I have to. I would like to brave a real trigger job to it some day to get it under the 3lb pull that it has done by yours truly..

so the difference between a predator and patrol is iron sights, rail for optic.. anything else?

What is the price for patrol vs predator?

Did you check mossberg's website for the specs? Gun companies do that you know

Sometimes it's nice to get the details from someone who knows instead of trying to decipher the manufacturers website.

I think the difference is the patrol has a 16.5 inch barrel, sinthetic stock and flash suppreser/compensator and iron sites where as the predator has an 18 inch barrel and laminate stock, no suppressor/comp. and no sights. Nice looking and feeling rifles.

Predator also come in 20". which is what Big 5 has I believe.

This is a gun discussion forum isn't it? I think for most discussions on these forums we could"technically" get info from other sources.. I can read manufacturers specs all day but forums like CGN help newbies like me understand what the practical differences are and what is important to know for an average shooter like myself.. :)

I've had mine for over a month now. I picked mine up at the Norwalk Turners for a very special price. :D It's chambered in .223/5.56 and although the stock is black, it's wooden and not synthetic. The bolt is a little sloppy when open, but there is no play when it's closed. PMAGs fit, but need to slapped in to get to seat properly. It comes with a 10rd mag, but USGI aluminum mags work great as well. It does come with a threaded barrel, but a flash hider is not included. Overall, not a bad gun for the money and is pretty accurate. I've shot about 350 rounds through it and has been accurate for me out to about 200 yards at Angeles with my 3x42 Nikon scope.

Wow what do you think the wood is like under the paint? Probably not that nice laminate. Does your version have the iron sights?

I tried the email mossberg on their site, asking if they would have a future scout model with iron sights and they just replied that they only have what is in their catalog, if anyone is interested in a scout model, flood them with emails and requests please!

smittty

The Patrol model should have iron sights. The gun I held at Turners had a black stock and I'd be very surprised if it was wood. It felt like a synthetic material that could pass as synthetic wood sort of like some of the newer decking materials.

Overall I like the Patrol model better but can't justify selling my Predator to get it. My predator is freakishly accurate and there is no guarantee that another rifle will match it.

Not sure what the wood is like under the black paint, but I doubt it's laminated like the predator model. Mine has the fiber optic front hooded sight and I forgot to mention that the trigger is ultra light and smooth.

One MVP Patrol left, on rack, at Escondido Turners. Just looked at it, wasn't for me. But hopefully someone reading this thread may want to jump on it. You can possibly request transfers to a Turner's closest to you.
