Nice scout Jaiofspam! If you don't mind, what is the mount and scope you have on there? And how is it holding up for you? Thanks.

Beautiful Mosins guys... Will need to take pics of mine soon.

thanks, its a b-square mount i got from midway... i purchased it before i found out about darrels scout mounts (which are highly recommended) but its holding up very well with the assistance of blue loctite. ive shot about 100rds with it on and it hasnt worked loose contrary to some negative reviews received :)

as for the scope its a ncstar 2-7x32 LER... for something that cost $35 its holding up very very very well to the recoil of the mosin while still holding zero :D

Awesome, thanks Jaiofspam! I have read some negative reviews regarding the side-mounted brass screws configuration of Darrel's scount mounts so I was thinking about giving S&K and/or B-Square mounts a try...

Thanks again for the review.

ive heard many good things about the s&k mount also...
you could always give the cheapy ncstar mounts found all over the web a try for about $10... my buddy uses this config and its holding up fine. my only gripe with the ncstar mount is that the hex screws strip easily :chris:

What's the turn down handle for? Were you going to put a receiver mounted scope on or something? And what mount is that? Looks like the $35 one i got from ebay that bounced all over the place. I need a darrell's or the sk mount.

the turned down bolt and pull ring knob is for fun... the new bolt handle helps a ton in cycling the action and the pull ring helps in engaging the "safety" or dealing with misfires :) i never intended to receiver mount a scope... the project in mind was always a scout setup

as for the mount... nope its not an ncstar, its a b-square mount i got from midway and so far its rock solid

How did you get your wood to look like that? refinished it or are the laminated? And what did you use and your method for using it?

pklin1297
01-03-2008, 8:23 PM
The middle M44 and the bottom M91/30 are laminated stocked, the top M38 is hard wood.

Not much you can do to refinish a laminated stock other than clean off cosmoline and shellac (if used) then either reapply shellac or oil. The hard wood is easier to sand down, stain and oil because you don't have epoxy to deal with.

looks cool indeed! but don't shoot it like that...probably catch fire after a couple dozen rounds! lol I was letting a class of shooters shoot my 91/30 and it got so dang hot some girl almost dropped it. Only about 25 rounds in about 10 minutes did that. It was fun showing what my rifle did compared to a buddy with his .223. Sure he had semi auto, and 30 rd mags to pop off..but my 54r rounds severely disrupted the can we shot at! lol

*gonna go watch enemy at the gates again tonight* *looking for big, ugly, dirty brown tarp to wrap around me like a cape so I can be Vassily at the train station staring down the major..*

How would the burlap catch fire before the wood does or begins to scoch? Are you only stating this in regards to the burlap touching the receiver?

And to spiggy, you should try spray painting the outside of the burlap to get a simple camo effect or dye the burlap using regualr clothing dye from any grocery store.

burlap is highly flammable... but its not going to spontaneously combust :D
as long as you keep it away from sparks or flames (muzzle) its going to be ok.
for added insurance you can spray on some flame retardant agent they use for making ghillies.

regarding coloring the burlap, i like the natural look but i may scrunch up a couple strips and throw them into a pot of coffee to darken and sorta get a camo look.

Spiggy
05-12-2008, 1:55 PM
actually, in it's current coloration, it works well in dry brown bushy grass...

...that or I'm really good at hiding

The burlap-wrap looks cool, though it is not historically accurate (regardless of what you saw in Enemy at the Gates). Soviet snipers did not do this.

Bird of Fire
05-17-2008, 9:47 AM
Sure, it cost me about 10 bucks in supplies, and all can be found at walmart.

Just used some sand paper to remove the old finish. Started with 220 grain, and worked my way up to 400 or so grain paper. Once everything was smoothed out, just wipe the stock down to remove all the dust.
Little tin of Minwax polyshades one step:
http://www.minwax.com/products/one_step_stain_and_finishes/polyshades.cfm
I think I used dark red mahogany as that's the color I was going for.
Apply a thin coat with a paint brush evenly. I let it dry overnight. Next day when I got home from work, I would rub it down with 0000 fine steel wool, wipe off any dust, and apply another coat. Repeat until color desired appears. I want to say that was 4 coats, so about a weeks worth of patience.
It's really not hard at all, just time consuming. And make sure you mask off the little bits of steel/blue. :)

Simmons 2-6x pistol scope, cheapie bi-pod, and an S&K optics mount (weaver). It's very nicely built. I had a choice of waiting 4 months or so for the Darrell's mount, or buy this one immediately. I went with the instant gratification. :D Here's hoping it hits anything from 200 yards.

^That appears to be the best rifling I've seen in a Mosin recently.

I just purchased my first Mosin (an M38) the other day, so once my 10 days are up, I'll post some pictures.
I'm thinking of stocking up on Mosins now, especially because a local dealer sells them for $100 or less, and carries almost every kind of Nagant ever made.

My Big 5 1943 91/30 Mosin Nagant and a M38 I bought off a fellow Calgunner

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/flipmode/Firearms/DSC_0319.jpg

I got a curved sniper bolt from Jim the Boltman and a mojosight on the 91/30. Still need to go to the range and test it out!

Yea, when I got my 91/30 almost two years ago at Big 5 I made sure to inspect and bring home the rifle I wanted. Only had to clean up the cosmoline, the bore and rifling was in good condition. I want to refinish mine, but I never done it before and don't want to screw up.

And Jim the boltman did a great job with the curved bolt. I highly recommend his business

Its a M91 so the sights are different than the later models. But you do not shoot with the sights up like that though. I am guessing he just put them us as a way to keep the rifle from tilting over or something.

Nope- that's the date of the stock. Looks like a Tula-made "1930" to me. The "CCCP" Stamp was on Izhevsk-made stocks and the letters were around a circle like this:

I was wondering if anyone has any information or experience with this mount?
http://home.comcast.net/~yzhu/accumount/Russian/m91_30.htm

I tried this set up because it was easy to install. Big mistake, even with loctite it vibrated loose. Then I eventually stripped out the threads in the aluminum rail.
I drilled and tapped my receiver for the ATI rail. It wasn't that difficult to do.
No problem since.

I did like the LER (long eye relief) scope though. It worked better with my eye sight.

It's not really a Dragoon it's basically a Finn version of M91. A Dragoon is more like M91/30.

jms, does your rifle's total length measure 48-3/4" or 51-1/4" ?
If 51 1/4" your correct on the M91.
Besides the SA mark, what gives it away to me as a Finn capture is the globe front sight has been swapped out for a blade sight.
I have a 1932 with identical markings (minus serial) that measures 51 1/4". But my bluing is worn to metal and counterbored. The importer also mistakenly
marked it 91/30.
Nice rifle you have there. -g

It's definitely a Finn Capture Dragoon, stock being 2 piece splice and SA mark. Length wise is just like 91/30 and the only difference is the rear sight (Dragoon give away). As far as front sight, globe sight is a 91/30 model, Dragoon still have a blade sight type just like the M91.
