I was looking through Big5's weekly ads online in the wee hours of the morning and stumbled upon this piece of art:

I'm aware Big5 tends to have sales on Mossberg 500s/590s, but take a closer look at the description and the picture...

• SYNTHETIC THUMBHOLE STOCK

To my knowledge, Mossberg doesn't even make a factory thumbhole stock for their 500 series. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this cheap photoshop makes me feel ashamed of owning a Mossberg and admitting it. Big5 and its employees usually get a bad rap for not being the cogniscenti of firearms we wish they'd be, but this one takes the cake.

Actually they to do make a thumbhole, 535, but from what I've seen it's generally camo. They very well could be putting that black Choate style stock on them. I would agree that the photo you supplied does look photo-shopped, the stock doesn't even line-up with the receiver. Not sure why this embarrasses you.

don't know either why you would be "embarassed" about it. Mossberg makes different combos for retailers sometimes, the 200 dollar 500 combo with the 18 inch and 28 inch barrels isn't in their catalog either as far as i can see. SO they took a black thumbhole stock and put it on a 590 body. what's the big deal?

Big5 often gets firearms from Mossberg (and Winchester) that were different (and usually cheaper) than manufacturer listed models. "Big5 Specials".
It would generally include lesser quality finishes, wood without checkering, cheaper wood, cheaper components, etc...
You can almost always tell the Remington and Winchester Big5 specials.

Obvious photoshop, they didn't even cut the old image off at the reciever. There's about an inch of stock before they edited in the thumbhole stock.

More commonly known in the past as a "bait and switch" ad. They obviously don't have any in stock and had to photoshop together one for their advertisement. When you go into the store to buy one, they will tell you that they are sold out and try and sell you another model.

No, they are actually in stock. There's one displayed at the store in Sunnyvale. It's a 500 not a 590 even though it does have the heat shield.
on edit: I agree that picture looks very fake. As I remember the stock lines up with the receiver and as stated earlier it is a 500 not 590

tanker/Cal: Sorry, at the time I couldn't think of a better word than 'embarrassed.' I think I was trying to get something along the lines of 'offended.' I love my Mossberg, and a photochop done so poorly in a nationwide ad just cheapens the Mossberg name...imo. Also, didn't know about the 535 or that the 28" wasn't in their catalog. I'm just so used to seeing people with their 18/20" barrels and knoxx stocks here. Any reason why the thumbhole stock isn't as popular?
xeno: Huh, I always thought the newer production guns would be of standard quality, unlike their surplus-beat-to-hell rifles.
M.Sage: I guess MSPaint didn't have enough tools to do the job right haha [/sarcasm off]
Bobs: For some reason, I feel like I wouldn't put it past them. :D
40cal: Thanks for the info. Was it still an 8shot 500 atleast?
Shane: Haha. Thanks for taking the time and scrounging those pics up. Guess Big5 isn't the only one too lazy to take a damn picture of what they're actually selling.

Lol, interesting. Never seen a shotgun with a thumbhole stock before. U learn something every day I guess. That big 5 pic is a bit dicey though...

My pleasure :D I didn't know they made these types of stock for the synthetic 500's until this thread.

I wanted to wait till Big 5 had their sale on Mossberg 590s again for 319.
But from what I'm reading.....there really is no difference except the 590 might hold hold just 1 more shell now.
My only thing with the 590 is I want it matte black instead of just blued. If this thing is Matte Black AND comes with heat shield and thumbhole stock.......what do you guys think?
Good deal? or should I just wait for the sale on their blued 590?

Yeah, it is an 7+1 500A with heat shield. I didn't like the stock though. The reach for the trigger was a bit too long for me at least. It wasn't horrible, just not as comfortable as I would like it to be.

The 590 receiver is *suppose* to be stouter than the 500 though I think they are both aluminum. 590 holds 8+1 and has a bayonet lug. Also the way the barrel attaches on the two are different.
