Thank you for your support and interest. Based on the results of the time/location poll, the vote for shooting at the Metcalf range on Saturday 12/29 won by a huge margin.

So, here're the details:

************************************************** *****************************************
************************************************** *****************************************
Meeting at 10:30AM Saturday 12/29
High Five Pizza.........(Branham Lane & Snell)
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=171+branham+ln,+san+jose,+ca&sll=36.97404,-122.03095&sspn=0.101759,0.228996&ie=UTF8&ll=37.267889,-121.833315&spn=0.006335,0.014312&z=16&om=1

Then after an early lunch, we'll head over to Metcalf (Field Sports Park) at around 11:30-12PM for an afternoon of shooting.
************************************************** *****************************************
************************************************** *****************************************

I hope everyone can make this even so we can put some faces to the screen names. Come show off your mad shooting skills, or in my case, my lack of skills :)

Don't worry if you've only got just "1" pistol (you've have too many soon enough), this meet is all about getting to know local folks who are as interested in firearms as you are. The requirement is to have an interest iin knowing Calguns folks and be interested in the shooting sports.

PM me for my cell number.

I could probably swing down that way. When and where is the question.

How about lunch at a range. Or after shooting. You don't shoot as well on a full stomach.

I'm pretty flexible w/ times. The last time I shot was early July of this year, so I'm probably pretty rusty.

Would December 29 be good for everyone ?

As to where, I guess that depends a bit on what people want to shoot.
I've only been to the following ranges here:

Target Master in Milpitas -- any indoor range is a bad choice for this gathering
Sunnyvale Rod and Gun Club -- has steel, can shoot your own swingers .22lr
Los Altos Rod and Gun Club -- bigger than SVRGC, no steel
Richmond Rod and Gun Club -- there only for CA IDPA match, but looks big

I'm open to suggestions on ranges.

Lunch before or after shooting is fine with me. I used to hate eating at the range, but NRA conventional pistol fixed that for me.

Let's hear your ideas...

I'll vote Los Altos Rod and Gun Club. How's next Saturday? I'll be around in Dec.

+1 it'll probably have more room than anybody else. Metcalf is nice too, but can be crowded. LARG is gonna be cold!

Metcalf is good - but it certainly gets busy on the weekends later in the day... maybe meet for breakfast and then shooting? :-)

Or shooting; till the hunger pains are too much; then exit for lunch?

Add me to the list too.

I also suggest Metcalf / County Field Sports park in south San Jose. During the week it's normally pretty good, but it does get crowded on weekends.

Monday - Tuesday - Closed
Wednesday - 10am - 4pm
Thursday - 12 noon - 6pm
Friday - 12 noon - 4pm
Saturday & Sunday - 8am - 4pm

I can do either weekdays or weekends at Metcalf - as it's easy highway / cell phone / wireless broadband access - in case I need to deal with my clients.

Los Altos Rod and Gun Club / other remote; areas; I'm available on weekends when not on kid duty only.

LARG is OLL friendly. As for Metcalf I believe they still are. Haven't been there for over a year now.

Whats the fee?

FEES

Our range fees are $13.00 per person ($6.50 for youths 17 and under) per day. We sell ammunition, targets, clay birds, shotgun shells along with eye and ear protection at competitive prices. We do NOT sell or rent guns

I am in for a Los Altos trip. I like that tin can range they have.

BillCA
12-03-2007, 12:37 PM
The primary disadvantage of LARG is that its location up on Skyline Blvd means consumption of mass quantities of fuel to get there. Note that it does get cold, damp and foggy up there in winter months which can limit the fun factor.

The "Metcalf" Field Sports Park has different lanes for rifle and pistol. The 200m rifle range is segregated from the other lanes more than easy walking distance. It does not offer a tin-can alley nor do they allow 'rapid fire' or shooting at less than 7 yards. But it's off the freeway and reasonably easy to get there.

Re: Polls
Probably need at least 2 - preferred date and where people are coming from. This way we can see if there is a suitable range closer to the majority of folks.

mcubed4130
12-03-2007, 2:55 PM
Conversely... I've seen a number of these "BIG EVENTS" get scheduled and rescheduled many times... perhaps... we should simply identify; "Calguns.NET - local range day of the week or month".

i.e. every 1st Saturday; we meet at LARG. Every 2nd Friday; we meet at Metcalf, etc...

Hey guys,

I've gone thru all the posts and here are the counts on range suggestions:

1. Metcalf/Fields sports park = 4 votes
2. Los Altos RGC = 5 votes

No votes for other clubs .... so I'm going to post a poll for these 2 ranges and go w/ the one getting the most votes.

As for dates, again, I went thru the posts and it looks like 12/29 and 12/30 may work out for most people. But I'll put a poll up too.

I apologize if I missed your post (I think I got thru them all) and didn't get your preference. Feel free to PM me and let me know my mistake.

Hello All, I have been a viewer here for some time now, I don't post just read for my own education, as a newish shooter I have learned quite a bit from readig posts here.
Just as a suggestion, if it's going to rain that weekend there is a central range in San jose, pretty much Pistol only and there is 5 lanes for shooting.

Have a look at their website, see what you think.
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year

This is a lunch first and then shoot. So, we can decide where to shoot while eating if Metcalf isn't appropriate. As for name tags, hey if someone prints mine, I guess I won't mind wearing it.

Have a safe and happy xmas, then come and meet some calgun folks Saturday.

Finally, anyone else bringing pistols or shotguns? I'm rifle-less.

I just called them (I've never been to metcalf) and they allow you to set up your
own steel swingers and/or paper targets. I didn't ask regarding target stands,
but it's fairly standard for an outdoor range to provide you with something to
staple your targets up.

I'll bring NRA targets and stapler; additionally, I'll bring steel swingers RATED
FOR .22LR ONLY. So bring your 22s out and we'll have some fun.

The list is just a list of people I send reminders to. You do not have to be on it to come :) In fact, "the list" is rather out dated as a few on it have other engagements and many (like you) are coming but not on the list. I should go and delete it... the less lists in this world the better.

OK, we got the name tags, but I forgot to bring a camera!!! It was on my list of things to do before leaving today, but I did not write my list down and forgot to bring it. I did remember all the guns and ammo though. It was fun meeting everyone, I think the count at the pizza place was 16, we should do it agian sometime.

If anyone wants to go to Target masters in Milpitas for some HG shooting, sned me a PM, I still need to break in my Ultra CDP II.

Thanks again, it was fun.

I'm sure Sardaukar has some incriminating pictures/photos. Got to try out some new fun toys, plus shooting in the rain was pretty awesome to see how we could still successfully hit targets in less than ideal conditions. We had a Calguns fireteam ripping the steel apart too.

Edit: Damn Sardaukar suckering me into getting a Millett DMS-1 for the Stag 2ht build.

Hey, that was fun. I think I'm the only guy who brought a 22LR rifle :) Either that or I'm the only guy secure enough to admit that I shoot a 22.. ha ha just kidding w/ you.

I'm glad that I was able to meet ftf w/ these great calguns folks.

I only got one pic and I took it after all of the shooting stopped. I'll post it later. I had a GREAT time. Lots of cool people to meet. Shooting the steel was the best. The only thing that sucked was the "gang banger" guys shooting at the end. They had a Stag with P50 installed, but setscrew out, and a shotgun or two. They were shooting from the hip, and yellin "foo" left and right. Those guys bugged the crap out of me, and if they're Calgunners, should be ashamed. One of the guys even got pissed at me when I told him he needed safety glasses before one of the RO's saw him. Not a care in the world about the rules, and people around them. "Hey foo how many bullets does that clip hold?" Me: "30" "Wow brah, you wanna sell one foo?" Me: "Nope that's illegal man" "Well, nobody has to know about it man". Wish Bill was there to stir the pot. My 9mm AR didn't function right because I don't have the right buffer setup in it yet. That was the only "fail" of the day. It's time to let everything dry out right now, one of my AR's got full of water because I left it in the rain while shooting my 1919 but it didn't slow it down at all.

Great time today! I had fun meeting more Calgunners, and the steel area was definitely fun.

I brought a .22 also, but hadn't thought to bring it down to the steel area till later, since it's zeroed for 50 yards. I wasn't too confident in the cheap rifle/cheaper scope/cheap ammo setup for longer ranges (that and I hadn't shot it in almost a year). No problem, though. I was ringing steel without hardly trying. :D

Got the AK sighted in with a Mojo rear sight (rocks!!!) and got to try out my new JTAC muzzle brake. That is the brake to have, even if it does "crack" a bit for the guy next to you. Standing next to it is about like standing next to a carbine-length AR. Not that bad. I've been next to some M1As that were far worse (I'm looking at you, Ivanimal :p ).

They walked past me as they were getting into their car, trying to lie to themselves and convince each other that it wasn't them that had shot slugs through the patterning board. Someone else did it first.

Had an odd moment as I was walking out. They called the final cease-fire just as I was reaching the door. Apparently this range doesn't like people shifting stuff around during a cease-fire, behind the line or not. I totally understand that; there isn't much room behind the line. However, as I'm reaching for the door, some guy pops out of it and says something about how I shouldn't be doing what I'm doing, and they're going to yell at me, and "go ahead, I'll let them talk to you about it in there" when he finally gets out of the way. The range staff could care less, since cease-fire had just been called, and they hadn't had a chance to start checking chambers yet. What's funny is that I ran into him again as I was leaving the rest room, and he tells me how he's told the staff to give me hell for carrying my gear 5 feet after they'd called cease fire. I rolled my eyes at him (wanted to gesture a bit more strongly, but I was being nice...) and he says "I know, I'm with you on this one." WTF!?

The range staff never did say anything to me, and I made sure to thank them and tell them I liked the range. Something I like to do anyway, but I wanted to give them one last chance to say something about it.

Oh, well. There's some at every range, I suppose.

I probably should read more then the law forum and the rifleman's forum... I was wondering why there was so many people at the range today, guess this is why.

Me and my dad went shooting there today thinking we'd be the only ones because of the weather, and we didn't know it was an event and tried to avoid the crowd. We were at the very end, I was plinking at the metal targets from stand 25 with my Garand when everyone else was standing up, you could tell when I hit it because it made a THUNK instead of a ping :p.

Yea but you guys left before the REAL crowed showed up! It was a sell out today!

It was rather funny; since I arrived first - I walk in - the main RO eyeballs me; says hey! haven't seen you lately how ya been. I smile; and say - well I'll probably help make up - I have 16 people coming in behind me. His face about dropped... and he says... uhh 16? as in 1.6.?

(This was the pizza going crowed arriving) The same RO later said we nearly doubled the population when we arrived.

Then for the rest of the day; I heard the staff - asking each other if there were any spaces left for more people that were arriving.

However once the rain (light sprinkles only) started; all the 50yard slots emptied out. :D

:) If memory serves it was kbyrd, that showed a little blood on the forehead.

And yes, with the Knoxx SpecOps there is about 1" of backward travel on the scope. The scope itself is long eye-relief... but regardless, choking up on my BOOMSTICK can be painful - even though the scope does have a rubber ring.

Right. Way to pull the race card right off the bat. You have no idea who I am, or my feelings towards hispanics. Did I ever say in my post that there was a bunch of "beaners" (that came from YOU in YOUR post) at the range? Out of 20 guys at the place that I work, I'm one of THREE that is white. The rest are immigrants from Mexico. Do you really think I'd hang around there if I was a racist?

Since when is bump firing OK at Metcalf? There were signs posted EVERYWHERE that says that there is a one shot per THREE second rule. It doesn't matter if it was getting late and you didn't feel like bringing your ammo home. You didn't bother to clean up any of your spent brass either. You guys did appear unsafe to me, and several other people. If it was your "crownies" first time, you should have done a better job keeping an eye on them.

You said "I was aware of the pin on the mag release being unscrewed. I think its stupid that you have a 30round mag on you, and i have a detacheble 10 round magazine release and im brakeing the law  "

You clearly DON'T know the law and are confused. 30rd mags ARE NOT ILLEGAL if you owned them prior to the year 2000. Your new in the box STAG with the Prince 50 set screw removed, is ILLEGAL regardless of how many round magazine you have in it. You guys had the setscrew out, and were using that AR just like you were in a free state. Don't play it off like you remove the mag just for transportation purposes. How about this? Next time you feel like putting a lock on it, pop the rear take down pin and open the upper receiver alittle bit. Then put the lock through the bottom of the upper and out of the ejection port. Simple and legal right? Or maybe get a Bullet Button? And maybe you did correct your friend on the mag sale, I didn't hear you say it after I corrected him.

You're right, I was condencending towards you. But leave your petty race issue out of this. And what does you being a Marine with kids and your job have to do with anything?

Guys,

For those who are intrested, Solano TargetMasters in Davis has their next match in on the 13th of January more information is at this site - http://www.actionpistol.org/target/target.htm
I know it is a bit of a drive but it is a lot of fun.

"a bit of a drive"... hmm, I was interested in going until I read their directions, which starts with "From Interstate 80 near Davis..."
I thought Richmond was far, this is way out there from the bay area.
Have you tried Richmond Rod and Gun Club's IPSC/IDPA matches?

BTW, you're shooting pretty well. You problem is easily fixable; let the break come as a suprise and shoot slower (learn more per shot, saves ammo $). I used to have the same problem until I realized that I'm not just flinching I'm also closing my eyes... so I had 2 problems vs your 1.

Metcalf is a fun place. I need to fix the CNC plasma cutter at work and burn out some cool targets for the steel range. Today's plates that I brought were fun, but not thick enough for good "PINGS!" Shooting steel is much more fun than paper. I need to figure out a way to mount my 1919 onto a wagon like this so I can just pack all of my gear onto it and make ONE trip in, and ONE trip out and just shoot from the wagon while I'm there :rofl2:

Have to say, it was an impressive day at the range yesterday!

Started off as an ordinary day, kind of cold and gloomy, but always better than say Michigan or Minnesota this time of year! ...... then at about 11:00 AM all these vehicles start rolling into the parking lot.......... a whole bunch of them.... I say's to myself.....hmm, what is going on?

Next I hear is "Calguns is here!"

OK, so I am thinking this is going to be interesting. I'm putting on my Range Officer hat  :43: and hoping it's going to be a good day.

Met BillCA and Kbyrd off the bat, GOOD GUYS! .....followed by many others like them with the blue name tags as the day went by.

I've been a volunteer range officer, NRA/CA DOJ certified instructor/01FFL for this range for more than 15 years. Got to say this was one of the most safe, friendly, law abiding, conscientious group of fellow sportsmen (and women) I've ever seen, bar none!

Not only did this group have a lot of interesting, historical, truly collectible, hard to find collector-type firearms, but you all used them safely, were VERY conscious and conservative with firearms safety rules, were up to date about CA firearms laws, were fully alert and paid attention (making my job easy), and some of you were actually pretty darned good marksmen! I don't say those words often or lightly.

It was a great day, and the staff and myself enjoyed meeting all of you. You are welcome here at the "Metcalf" range (Santa Clara County Field Sports Park Shooting Range). Myself, and the staff hope you had an enjoyable time and that you will come back soon.

If any of you have questions or comments about the range or it's services, please feel free to email or PM and I will do my best to assist you and to answer your questions.

Best Regards,
Barry, volunteer range safety officer, SCC FSP.

:) If memory serves it was kbyrd, that showed a little blood on the forehead.

Yup, that was me. :chris:

I'm used to mounting a shotgun (even if it's benchrest) a certain way every time. No matter how many times the you told me "don't choke up on that scope", muscle memory took over! I got dinged the first time, your son noticed the small cut (scope hit the bridge of my glasses, my glasses are apparently dangerous). The worst part about it? I couldn't shoot the other 5 slugs without a really bad flinch.

Great, meet guys. Thanks again to all. Ready to do another one. I just gotta find a left handed bolt rifle.

Thanks! It was my first time at Metcalf and I really enjoyed myself. The steel area was a treat for me, since a lot of ranges around here don't have that kind of thing. Shooting paper gets boring after a while.

Your range was really organized and well-maintained. Your crew does a really good job.

Had a good time also. The place was sure packed. Thanks to Bruce for letting me try out that VERY NICE M-14. Puts mine to shame. :(

Nope, I wasn't looking at 1X, but when magnified, the FSB isn't there. Some people on ARF.com say that even if they do see the FSB at 1X, its blurry and unintrusive.

Ordered a Larue SPR Lt-104 (1.5) for it too. Mount and scope should come in on Friday. Midway USA has the DMS-1 for $200 right now on sale.

On mine with a 2x7 VX-II compact the front sight is there but blurry and you don't really notice it. I have a BM Dissy upper so the front sight is at rifle distance.

Cool. I just ordered a 20" upper and am debating putting glass ontop or sticking with irons. Does the front sight get less in the way as you zoom in?

At no magnification, or should I say 1.1X, you will see the front sight post and ears, but very faintly. I find it's not enough to be distracting.

That wasn't the real 'BoomStick' out there today, I had the real boomstick. :p

Thanks for letting me play with your 375 H&H it was fun to shoot.

One of these days; I'll load up with my 12g 3" 600gr magnum slugs (I only had the little 2 3/4" 437gr slugs with me yesterday) and we can do a proper comparison. We can go in and buy Blue some new steel targets and see which rounds hammer the steel more... ( And bring a mini-sledge to straighten out the targets after every couple hits. ) :D

Hey guys, wanted to drop a quick note and say how much fun I had at this meet! I enjoyed meeting everyone and the shooting in the rain was an added touch of fun for the day!
I did notice the guys mentioned earlier with the illegally configured build, and commented on it with several members. Didnt know that this much grief would come out of it though. All I will say is this, legal is legal, and illegal is exactly that, illegal. Owning a OLL means doing some research so you dont put yourself into a illegal situation, so take that responsibility seriously, whether you agree to the letter of the law or not. Maybe those new members can do some research here and that way they can be sure they are in compliance. Hopefully you guys will join us on further shooting meets and get to know these guys as well. What has started out as a negative im sure will quickly be turned into a great positive once you get to know these folks.
It was a blast watching the steel shoot, as well as the 1919a4 that 84s10 brought out! I hope FedUpWBs got his gun working, I know he was having issues with a few of them.
I enjoyed meeting BillCa, FedUp, 84S10, TheDrickel, M.Sage, Mcubed, SoupNazi & SN dad, and all the others, and thanks goes out to Ching, for putting this all together! I do think we need to start adding more ladies in the meets though! DragonFly im sure would have enjoyed it! Just a FYI, I still have the "Hello My Name Is. . ." nametags, so we wont need any for the next shoot!
The range and the Range officers were great! Even though they had to tell me to slow down just abit, I didnt realize the 3 second as I had never shot there before. I loved the facility, and cant remember the last time I saw that many young children, women, and diverse cultures shooting at a range! Cant wait to go back and do some more shooting at that facility!

My wife was thinking of coming, but between the last several "gun things" I've gone to being ultra-guy thing only; and the rain - she decided to let just my son and I go instead. Also my oldest daughter has been asking to go shooting (will be her 1st time) but I don't own a 22lr yet; so either I'll need to pickup something; or I'll need a loaner.

Also next time; I hope to spend more time on the handgun side... but since just about everyone from Calguns had longarms, I just sort of never made to over to the other side.

Really want to try out a CZ52 and a DE 44m or 50ae - at some point.

MCubed: when you want to hit the range again, let me know. I can bring my .22 and CZ52. I definitely would like more trigger time on my AK, or maybe I'll drag out the Mosin. It's been a while since that one's had lead through it.

Put me in a barber's chair.
Snip, snap, and I had no hair.

I thought I'd get the Bruce Willis look going on. Plus its more aerodynamic and high speed.

I've got a few 22's here also that you could borrow at the next shoot. Once my 9mm AR is running 100% that thing has no recoil at all either so that'd be an option. I was thinking of bringing my son but decided that I needed the time to myself instead of worrying about him. Stormfeather! It was very nice meeting you and Dragonfly. She shoulda tried out my MMG build! I've got both MMG and BB builds and I have no idea which way I'm going to go on my next two builds. I was kind of surprised that only a few people tried out my 1919. Shooting in the rain was definitely fun.

Give me an email sometime. I have both a J-Frame .22 revolver and a 617 K-Frame .22 that I can bring to a range session.

If she's old enough, I can always let her try my 3" .32 Long to see if that's fun for her too. Meanwhile, Dad can see if firing a .41 Mag causes him to develop a flinch! ;)
