View Full Version : Where did you buy your Romy AK Kit(s)?

I would like to pick up a couple of inexpensive romanian kits. I'm sure many of you have some experience with them and I would like your input...

Q1. Where did you buy it?
Q2. How much/when?
Q3. Are you happy with the kit? (any missing / broken parts, etc?)

Really just interested in the Romy Gs right now, so if you respond about another type of kit, please clarify for me.

I will likely build from a 100% stamped Rec first, then I'll try bending my own.

I'd appreciate your comments.

Centerfire Systems $100 (Sold out)
J&G Sales $100 (now $120)
Military Gun Supply $110 (Sold out)
Just put an order in with Century Arms for two more @$100 each.

The Centerfire kit was the best one out of bunch, but they sold out a few months ago.

The scruffiest of the three (bad wood) was from J&G, which was missing it's cleaning rod. Not really a big deal, I wasn't planning on using the original furniture anyway.

I'm just waiting for the Century kits now. Still a chance they might decide to cancel the order, as they can sometimes be a little over cautious when dealing with CA.

Copes distributing. I always had good luck with the off the top of the pile $99 ones (I think they're $114 now). Only had one where the bolt didnt match the kit but all were in excellent shape.

I have a complete parts kit for sale. It was a new gun with thumb hole lamanited stock. The Trunion is marked "Romak". The customer never regesitered the weapon. He then cut the receiver and is selling the kit. All parts are there and also has a wire folding stock and a pistol grip with it.

He want's $125.00 for all. PM me if interested.

Prices will continue to go up because of the barrel import ban.

I've gotten kits from Cope's, J&G, the Files' Bocefus, and DPH. The only ones that stood out were the DPH, they had surface rust under the handguards.

I have yet to buy a Romie G kit from Copes, but I bought one of their AMD-65 kits a few months ago. It was in near mint condition. Copes has very good shipping prices on kits if I remember correctly ($7.95?).

It was just posted earlier today on this forum, that Classic Arms will not ship parts kits to CA. Ridiculous way to run a business.

and a 10rnd mag?

:D

Order the 5 round mags from CDNN. http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ak765rdblstm.html

You can cut the 5 round follower to fit 10 rounds or get a Tapco follower. The Tapco follower will count as one US part.

NDS 3 for the Romy-g kits.
rivets from ak-builder.com

AK's are supposed to have BIG-*** mags hanging out of the bottom.
Convert some of your 30 round mags into 10 rounders. If you don't have 30 rounders, go buy some replacement parts and make them into 10 rounders.

And buy an AK bullet button.

So.. other than the Romy parts kit, and rivets.. and the Tapco trigger kit.. that's all I need parts wise?

thedrickel

You will need two less evil foreign parts in addition to the receiver & FCG. Easiest is the muzzle brake (12$) and no pistol grip or MMG.

You can get AK 10/30 mags from either CWS or Metroshot for around $30.

The Tapco G2 single hook trigger is not recommended for use with the NDS-3 receiver, but the double hook is fine. You just need to Dremel out an extra notch on the trigger well of the receiver to fit it, as drawn with a marker in the photo:

If you want to replace the stock set, I highly recommend Matt at Ironwood designs. http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/2aprod/1products.html

This will give you 3 more US parts.

As for the Tapco G2 single hook, I would just grind the bevel in the hammer IF you have an issue using it. The problem that happens with the Tapco single hook FCG is the disconnector may not work which causes the hammer to follow the bolt after firing. This happens especially when using the trigger reset or trying to bump fire. The fix is easy though. Nodak Spud goes over it on their web site. http://www.nodakspud.com/troubleshooting.htm

I have never tried the double hook G2 trigger so I can not comment on that, however I would rather modify the hammer then a receiver. To each is own.

+1 on AK builder rivits. They squish nicely.

Does the NDS-3 receiver have to be shipped to a FFL?

Does the NDS-3 receiver have to be shipped to a FFL?

Yes, it is a 100% receiver, and it's dealt with just like any other firearm, including having to buy a trigger cable lock for it (even if there is no trigger installed yet).

JG just raised their romy kit price to $139, and Numrich is out. WTF? Got one from Apex where the price is still $135, $145 shipped. I wanted to buy 2 but couldn't justify the near $300 it would have cost.

I just ordered a kit from Copes. $140 for their hand select. About 6 months ago it was $137 for the hand select PLUS a G2 trigger group. Before that it was $124 for handselect+G2. I was thinking about getting a kit from J&G but once they raised to Copes' price, it was no contest.

I don't think this is gouging. I think it is just supply running out. Kinda like 8mm Yugo was $50/900 last year, $150-200 a few months ago, and now people are trying to get serious money for it ($350 on GB :p). Soon there will be no more kits with bbls.

My pessimistic view (from business experience) is that the vendors are holding off on selling them to "discover" a lost supply at some point in the future and sell at MUCH higher prices. "Rare Romanian parts kits, recently discovered in our warehouse $250" It makes sens from a business standpoint, cant say I wouldn't do the same.

Just phoned Century Arms to get a tracking no. for my order of 2 x Romanian Mdl 1975 GP AK parts kits, and in short, the Big Brown Truck is delivering today. I ordered online and put in the comments box : "Please remove magazines prior to shipping".

So Century can / will ship to CA if they're TOLD to remove the mags.

At $99.95 plus $12.95 flat rate shipping for 1 - 5 kits, and orders over $500 get free shipping. Get them while you can.

UPS messed up the delivery so my order from Century was a day late. Both kits were 1979 and all matching serial numbers, and one kit had very light surface rust on small areas (but no pitting at all), which is not a big deal since it's got to be refinished. Wood I wasn't going to re-use anyway, but the kits are complete and bores were good. In fact, it was no better or no worse condition than the last kit I bought from J&G Sales (except J&G's kit was missing the cleaning rod).

Overall, I think they're good value at $99.95 each. The reason there is some light surface rust is the kits are bone dry and almost completely oil-free, that and being placed into sealed poly bags.

I got a really nice Romy kit from these guys:

http://gunthings.com/

It was fired very little. Bore like new, with sharp rifling. Wood in excellent shape. Even the park on the barrel and dust cover was perfect, with no scrapes. But I'll have it reparked anyway, just so it matches the NDS-3 receiver I bought for it.

I paid $110 about 4 months ago, but now they're selling for $149.
