We need to write a letter to our local officials on some topic important to us - I chose CCW's for Cali.

Im pretty sure this has been asked before (I think I even have subscribed to those threads). But where are some places I can look for crime stats, CCW benefits, crime in states with "shall issue" vs .. us :(

Obviously some of the CCW forums ...
where else? I do not want to sound like a crazy firearms mad man, but would like still like this letter to be ... strong

The big researcher here is John Lott (http://johnrlott.blogspot.com/). More Guns, Less Crime, (2nd Ed, 2000) is the latest book-length treatment.

You'll find that Lott has damaged his reputation with some 'sock puppetry' participation in discussions of his work, and one squirrely survey problem (http://www.johnlott.org/files/GenDisc97_02surveys.html).

The best you will be able to show, with current data, is

CCW holders generally have a lower rate of crime than the general population
Overall, CCW availability is simply irrelevant to crime rates - they neither go up nor down significantly as a result of changes to CCW laws.

Texas, Florida and Michigan have easily locatable data for CCW holders and crime - Google is your friend.

In less than 1 minute I went to www.nra.org and then linked over to www.nraila.org and then under the heading of "Issues" found a link to "Right-to-Carry" which . . . is the first link on my sig line.

There are also worthwhile links at:

a link to a Cramer and Kopel article at:

and a link to a Gary Kleck article at:

Also, since you're a student, be sure to check out my threads (and the links in the business cards) at:

and consider as gifts for yourself, friends, and/or family something from:

If you plan to wear one to school, given the nutty cases of kids being suspended for merely drawing a picture of a gun, I'd avoid ones that have images of guns and go for the ones w/the big eagles.

Also, our very own "canthavenothinggood" also sells some great T-shirts (and hats): http://gunsr4.us/page2.html
