View Full Version : Watcha Carry?

I'm sure many, if not most of us, carry concealed. Just in case I "need" to buy a new carry piece, I am curious what you all are carrying and whether you would recommend it or not.

I hope this topic hasn't been discussed already.

probably has been discussed but:

i like to carry my xd45 compact the most. i like the size and way it shoots, plus i am the most proficient with it.

if i need a slimmer weapon (XD is kinda wide) ill carry my browning hi power

if i need something really compact, the XD9 sub compact.

to each their own though...

With my bad back I love the J frame on my belt or in my boot.my 92 sholder rig kills my back after a few minuites and it even hurts on my belt too.

I hope this topic hasn't been discussed already.

The attached are the weapons on my CCW. Here's my rationale:

1) M1911 is the least carried. I used to carry it quite often, but it got replaced by other more comfortable options. When I do carry it, I use a strong-side Askins rig.

2) Beretta 92 Vertec is used when I anticipate night use with the Streamlight TLR-1. The full capacity mags provide me with almost 50 rounds of firepower. It rides in either a Jackass shoulder rig or a Hume belt-slide. (see comments on briefcase carry below)

3) Ruger P345 is used when knockdown is more important than firepower. It has the same light rail capability and carry options as the Vertec.

4) Beretta M21a .22LR is my summertime deep-cover choice in a DeSantis pocket holster. I know, it's a .22, but it's better than bare knuckles.

5) Smith SW9G is often carried due to being one of the most comfortable choices, light weight, and respectable firepower. It is very comfortable in a Hume belt-slide under a light shirt or jacket

6) HK P7 is one of the best carry pieces ever, IMHO. It blends compactness, decent firepower, excellent ergonomics, with accuracy. It's a bit heavy, but I carry it in a fanny pack usually, but sometimes in a Hume belt-slide.

One of the most important characteristics in a carry gun in comfort. I carry most every day, but the situation varies. When choosing which gun, I consider likelihood of the threat along with need for concealment. The bottom line is if your gun is not comfortable to carry, you won't have it with you when it really counts.

Another carry option I use with the bigger guns when I'm traveling in my car is to put my pistol, Taser and pepper spray, along with spare mags and other gear in a nylon briefcase. It rides nearby in the car, and when I get to my hotel I can just carry the whole set-up into the room unobtrusively.

This works well for me, but luckily I live in a very gun-friendly county in which the Sheriff will put as many guns on your CCW as he can fit on the permit. Had I had to go with just one, I'd probably go with the P7.

You are lucky to have as many weapons listed. Our Sheriff will only allow 3... As Hitman13 will atest.

My primary is Colt Officers, SS, followed by my Glock 36

CA DOJ firearms division put out a "request" to all Law Enforcment Agencies that they limit the number of guns listed on a CCW to 3 guns... Its a recent thing and I once knew a guy who had 25 listed on his CCW back in the day when that was OK with DOJ... Why I have no idea since DOJ has neither any control or effect on the guns that you carry. You local LEA enters them in the system as carry guns so the rational that they initally provided of increased cost of entering all those extra guns is crazy.

Just one more limit in CA.
As a LEO I was authorised to carry anything that I could qualify with that the range master would sign off on. I was certified to carry 15 different handguns for off-duty/ back up. Its just a matter of options based on the need as far as I'm concerned.

What county do you live in where they allow 6 guns on a permit?

Right now I've got:
1) EAA witness in 9mm, 40, 10mm and 45ACP
2) Kahr arms PM40
3) USP40c

I think I'm going to replace my Kahr arms PM40 soon with a XD45c though or my ruger blackhawk 45LC/45ACP

+1 on that in PRK, but in 29 other states:
Colt 1991A1 Compact
Walther KKP/s
Ruger SP101
North American Arms .22 Mag.

I need to get the following added to my NV permit:
Kimber Ultra CDP II
Beretta Tomcat 3032
Glock 27

Once that is done, probably just use the Kimber, Walther and Beretta, depending on dress.

P2000 FTW!

I carry one as well, a V3 .40S&W riding in a Milt Sparks VM-2 holster.

I also have a Kimber Custom II TLE listed on my permit, however I don't carry it nearly as much as I do the P2000.

Yup, SF, CoCo, SM, Alameda and SC CO's are a bi*** to get a CCW. LA is just as bad. Get out of the large metro areas and it's not so bad. Check out this link, CA CCW by county, then pick a place to live:

I live in the bay so of course no CCW. I usually open carry while at home. When I do carry at home it's usually a Glock 30 in an OWB Desantis holster.

Up here in the "free" part of the state I have the following:

Charles Daly 3.5" 1911 in 45 acp. This gun is compact enough for most situations and attire, is reliable with over 8,000 rounds through it and depending on the situation is my go to gun.

Taurus 605 2" .357 revolver. This is new and has about 150 rounds through it. Can be a handful with full magnum loads but is real small and blends in well when in a suit (which is frequently) or in a hip pocket for jaunts on the Harley. Oh yeah, at $348 new otd it was cheap also!

CZ75 Compact in 40 S&W.... I love CZ's and this has not been carried yet (kinda hard to find holsters for a CZ in lefty) but it is accurate, small enough to carry and has enough capacity that an extra mag is not required although I never carry without a reload on me.

I added the CZ Compact after firing it enough to be confident that it is reliable enough for me to trust my life with it. It replaces my CZ75B full size in 40 S&W.

I removed my S&W mod #28 to put the Taurus on as it was just too big to carry around. Hell I would have needed to carry 8 speed loaders just to offset the weight on that side from this hefty monster.

Nice setup, Black Majik. Whatcha ride? Any trouble with carrying under the Astars jacket?
I'm in the same boat--Alameda County being a "yeah right" CCW area, but think I'll start using my PM9 in a pocket holster for my long out-of-state bike tours, once my Utah CCW comes in. I want something I can get to quickly, even with moto gloves on.

Thanks, I used to ride a CBR F4i, but unfortunately gave up riding.

A PM9 seems to be a great choice, but the triggerguard is really small, especially with gloves. For wearing a motorcyle jacket, maybe a compact size pistol and shoulder holster may work well too.

Nope, not impossible, just improbable depending upon your geographic location; some parts of the state you're more likely to have success than others.

Move to the right county. Some county's are nearly "Will Issue" if you pass the background check.
