Looks like Belgium mfg., Winchester buttplate, and chambered in .300 Savage. Neat sight, huh? TIA

.300 Savage? Is it a rechamber? The rifle looks old for that caliber...

ETA: I was right, it's older. Sporterized Belgian Mauser, 89/36 I think.

Another edit! Important one!

Make DAMN sure that thing is actually chambered in .300 Savage! That would be a weird chambering (IMO) on so many levels. Add to that the fact that this model rifle was originally chambered in 7.65 Mauser, and 7.65 Mauser is almost physically identical to .300 Savage (close enough to get it to chamber and fire). It seriously looks like Savage might have "adapted" 7.65 to make their round. If not, it's odd that more than a few of the dimensions on the two are within a .005" of each other; neck diameter, case diameter, case tapers out to within .00X" inch of each other, rim is same diameter. OAL is slightly different, and so is the length from the rim to the neck, though! .300 Savage is shorter.

Ok, I can see a little background is warranted. This was my late grandfather's deer rifle for many years. After he bought a new one (Remington semi), he let me carry it on hunts. As far as I know, it has always fired .300 Savage. He called it the "Savage", and I have left-over ammo for it headstamped as .300 Savage. Hope this helps. I'm simply trying to determine make/model for my records, as it will be mine soon. Thanks guys.

Cool background.

I think I'd still stick a .300 Savage headspace gauge in it before I shot it. :chris:

And since I forgot, yeah, that rear sight is awesome!

Cheaper to make a chamber cast
