Ok. I'm shopping right now for a new rifle and I'm up in the air about what to buy. I like the kick I get when I'm firing my mosin nagant, but never do anything other than plinking. On the high caliber end I'm looking at the Mossberg 4x4 bolt action chambered for 30-06. But on the other hand I've seen some nice .17HMRs and .22 LR rifles too. Opinions?

Edit: Not going over 500 buckeroos.

Savage makes a nice .17hmr with accutrigger for around $350

I guess that's another thing that bugs me. The .17 and .22 seem so miniscule compared to my precious 7.62x54R. What effect would a .17 have on a watermelon at 75 yards? lol.

Why not just buy 5 more Mosin-Nagants? They look real purdy all lined up in a row... :p

Lol. that they are. Mine's got a monte carlo stock though, so it doesn't have that historical sheen on it. . .at all. It's pretty ugly IMHO. But I feel like that Mossberg 4x4 is the best bet. It's just plain ole pretty to me. It's got a 4-5 round capacity and I know that's not an issue in california, but the magazine is detachable. What's the story on that?

i have a mosin 91/30 with the monte carlo stock, ati bent bolt handle and scope mount that i drilled and tapped to the receiver. i can do the bolt handle and scope mount install for you, and you can mount a nice scope to it, and not have to buy another rifle since you like the 7.62x54r caliber. mine shoots sub moa with a cheap ($120) bushnell banner 6-18x50 scope. i have alot of fun plinking with it, plus its a good hunting rifle. i love hunting wild bore with it.

You're looking at a 06 and a 22. Isn't that like looking at a sports car and a pickup truck?

That's a no brainer in the calibers you are asking about you should have both.

Get a good 22 and work on marksmanship. Something like a CZ 452, or if you want to go cheaper, Savage MkII. Everyone should have at least one 22lr.
