Last Monday I was speaking to a co-worker and he told me that it would be fun to go shoot in the desert or forest, Im in the Bay Area and I just wanted to know wheres the nearest (or worth while) desert or forest that I could just go into (I don't mind paying a small park fee) park and set up some targets and shoot away?

Depends on what you want to do. Do you want to play Green Beret or Scout Sniper?

I have hunted in New Hampshire and Nevada. For me they are both equally fun but very different.

I applied for Moose lotteries in New Hampshire a couple of times but have never been able to get one. That to me would be a hunt! Someday I hope to go to Alaska and bag me a Grizzley.

In the thick Forest of New Hampshire, there are very few clearings, most of the time you are limited to about 20 yards or less. You take out a deer 20 yards away with slugs. Cool part about New Hampshire is something like 80% of the hunting grounds are on private property. You can use your rifle, but you have to make sure you are not within 300 yards of a place of dwelling (like a house). As always, know your target and what's behind it.

If you like to hike, the Forest is no fun unless it has a clearing, like a horse/hiking trail or fireroad, but normally you want to stay away from these because that is where people are at. When hiking through the brush, all the animals can hear you from miles away. If you want to shoot something you just have to play Army Green Beret and stay in one place waiting for an ambush. It is not a difficult wait, stay in one place for at least 15 minutes and it is almost certain something will come close to you. There are a lot of Deer stands that people build that you can use, but to me they are no fun, as all you do is sit up there. But with the stands you increase your chance of a kill 10,000%. Regardless, even if you don't shoot anything, you get a lot of excercise hiking in the hot humid New Hampshire summers (feels like Florida) while the bugs are all over you, and get to enjoy the beautiful scenario... FUN FUN FUN... once winter hits, which can last up to 7 months is when you really learn to appreciate it.

Wetlands: Forest also has Wetlands, but to me Wetlands are wetlands and as long as their is a Marsh, you will see a lot of waterfowl (if season is right) and will get plenty of chances to shoot. You get to play AAA (anti aircraft artillary) gunner and spotter.. fun fun fun.

Desert has to be the funnest though. It is like you are in a video game and you get your choices at targets. You can see for miles and miles and can easily take shots at stuff 600 yards away (provided you have a 10x scope to see critter). I don't have my Nevada Hunting License yet, but you don't need it to shoot Coyotes, Jack Rabbits, or Prarie Dogs. I have yet to run into a Coyote while I am armed, seems like those buggers only come out when they know I don't have a firearm with me  But lots of rabbits too shoot though! Make camp on a little crest thats elevated and pretend you are a scout sniper and the rabbits are all Iraqi's.. then you can collect the bodies and line them up for inspection, maybe gather some intelligence... fun fun fun.

Fireroad.. you kinda want to stay away from these as people and rangers regularly uses these roads.

You get lucky finding a beaver dam, but karma rewards you with not seeing a beaver >:(

Here I am at a friend of a friends place. Fenced off and 200 acres to do what we please =)
Yeah the gear looks Disneylandish, but the maroon shirt does not seem to scare away the game, and it enables other hunters to see me.

Ofcourse when winter sets in New England is when you really appreciate the summers. Winter is fun snow mobiling, but shooting a weapon and hunting is no fun.

Desert Landscpape is easy to navigate with a truck. And you can see rabbits easily all around.

Cool part about Desert landscape is you can cover a lot of area in a 4x4. If you get bored of shooting rabbits you can get targets out of your truck and set them up. Always fun to shoot towel heads.

Random thought.... If someone said "Nate, you have to take a vacation right now and you get to go wherever you want", I would go to to Wyoming or some other unpopulated state with my 10/22, Mark II and 2k rounds of ammo and go hunt prairie dogs. When I am bored with that, I can try nailing deer with the M44.
