11-11-2007, 8:43 PM
The Prec / Tac Rifle class is tenatively set for Jan 19 & 20, 2008 for the first and second days and Feb 1, 2008 for the third day. (Pete if this presents a conflict let me know.)

To date the following parties have paid either their deposit or in full and are confirmed:

Pistolpete75
Wildcard
rksimple

prc329
hypertex
ar15barrel
cypress32
Rhys898

We have room for five more people and when that number is reached the registration will be closed. If you are interested in this class contact me ASAP and make arrangments regarding the deposit so your place can be reserved.

SOmetime during this week I will be sending out an equipment list which will be very similar to the one for my clinic. Heads up the besides your rifle with good glass the following items are mandatory 1) You will need 100 rounds per day of either factory match ammo (FGMM, BH, LCLR, LC Match etc.) or similar reloads; 2) Your will also need either pack, LBE, LBV or dragbag as once you leave your car you will not be returning until the end of the day (I would also suggest that whatever you choose be hydration compatable as even in the cold you'll need to stay hydrated); 3) sling for your rifle which is suitable for position shooting as well as carrying (suggestions being TIS M24 / quick cuff, Turners Saddelry 1907 or at least a GI M14 Nylon (not cotten web) sling; and 4) Rifle data book.

Confirmed the dates with the Wife. I am good to go. Hopefully I will have my barrel installed by then :) If not the stock barrel has been shooting 1/2 in and a couple of one hole groups since I got my rifle sighted in today :D

a neighbor will complain if we shoot on sundays. it must be done on mayby a friday and saturday combo.

there is a *****y neighbor there, so i don't want to cause any issues.

if we go to sunday, we should do class instructions only and mayby go to the mojave which is very local from there if people want to shoot.

I wish things would have worked out differently so I could have had the chance to meet ya'll :)

Hopefully in the new year I'll be able to put together the starter Bolt-gun package I put down on paper so I can get a second chance at learning the sweet science of the Precision Shot.

Have a great time guys!

Can you make an itemized list in order of priority?
I have some of these things, but not everything.
For example, I have a drag bag, but I don't think it has enough room for all that stuff so a backpack may also be in order.
Mostly, I'd like to see the list prioritized so I know where to spend money first and what to skip.

I'll hopfully finish up the list this eveining - it'll be very similar to the list for the clinic.

If you have any specific questions in the mean time hit me a PM and if need be I'll give you my cell number to discuss.

Here is the equipment list for the January class:

Required Equipment:

1. Rifle & Optics – Scoped Rifle capable of 1 MOA accuracy or better. The scope
should have a mil-dot or comparable reticle. The rifle should be zeroed for 100 yards with the ammo you bring.
2. Ammo – 100 rounds of match grade commercial ammo or reloads per day - 300 rounds total. If possible know the velocity of your ammo before hand and try to make a print of a ballistics chart with your ammo.
3. Sling – your rifle must be equipped with a sling that can be used in shooting positions as well as carry. I suggest either a Quick Cuff / M-24 from TIS or a 1907 from Turner Saddlery.
4. Rifle Data Book (w/pen) - If you do not have one and did not get in on the group buy I still have a couple left.
5. Plain notebook and pen – for taking notes
6. Mil-Dot Master or calculator
7. ACI, or slope doper to use in determining the angle of your rifle when taking a shot up or downhill. If you don’t have either that’s fine bring a basic protractor about a foot or so of fishing line and a small slip shot weight and I’ll show you how to make a poor man’s slope doper.
8. Backpack, Ruck, LBE, LBV, or drag bag to carry your gear
9. Chamber flag
10 – Tool kit for your rifle including torque wrench for stock, rings and bases and a sectional rod.

Optional Equipment

1. Bi-Pod – front bi-pod from your rifle. I suggest a Harris swivel type with notched legs either 6-9” or 9-12” depending on your rifle and how low or high your prone position is.
2. Rear Bean Bag or monopod for rifle – rear beanbag is preferable during this class.
3. Elbow and knee pads – I do not recommend the hard shell type, especially in the elbow pads.
4. Shooting mat
5. Blast Pad
6. PDA or 5.11 watch with ballistics software.
7. First Aid kit – I will be carrying one in my gear – however everyone should have a small personal one.

Clothing:

It will be January and we will be at 4000 ft elevation give or take so dress accordingly. We’re all adults so I’m not going to make a list of what to wear except to say that layering is your friend and due to the terrain some type of boot is highly recommended.

Food and Water

Plan on not returning to your vehicle from the time you leave in the morning until the end of class in the afternoon. Pack you chow and any snack you may want. Also I’d suggest that you carry between 2 – 3 liters of water. You can dehydrate just as fast, if not faster, in cold weather as you do in hot.

There's still time to buy some more.

I also need to prep some more brass to have the 200 rounds available for the 2 day weekend.

You can reload 100 more rounds in time for the 3rd day.

Graf's obviously gives better FFL discounts as Midway only gives a few dollars off a 500ct box of Matchkings.
I think it has to do with the bullets being on-sale at Midway though...

you need to chrono your load first, then plug in your data into jbm ballistics which is free on the internet. it's not perfect, but it's a really good guideline to know your approximate come ups.

we talking about just the bullets to reload our own ammo.

I really like APS and enjoyed shooting there each time I went. The only problem is Angeles is 600 yards and has a lot more steel I noticed what looked like a 2 moa target at 400 yards last time I was there. Maybe after Thanksgiving we can talk you into letting a few of us come in early and shoot the 865 :D

Yup.. I like the APS environment, but each range has its benefits.

Burro will let you set paper all the way out to 500 yds.

Angeles has steel out to 600 yds? in 100 yd increments.

The environment and people at APS are top notch. Just need more steel.

Angeles has paper to 200 and some days you can go to 300 and steel from 200 to 600 yards in roughly 100 yard increments. I would like to see some odd ranged stuff and if it wasn't for someone with a 50 and the forest service they could go to 800 yards.

Timberwolf
11-17-2007, 8:21 PM
I'm trying to get the rifle area more competative with other ranges. Suggestions like this is what I need to get things moving. When you're at APS mention to Tommy (large guy reddish hair - the owner) that you'd like to see more steel or smaller steel up on rifle and/or paper out to 200 - the more suggestions like that the better able I am to get what needs to be gotten. All these things have been brought up be me many times but it takes the interested public to makes things happen.

As far as getting together to shoot at 865 - no problem - I and Bob don't mind coming in early and we have the green light to do so as long as there's enough people to justify it. Maybe we can make it a monthly thing it addition to the match so everyone can finally get their dope.

This is a go for the 19th and 20th as long as we don't get snowed/sleeted out. A brief look at the 10 day forecast (which only goes thru the 18th so I guessing the weather trend will remain the same) indicates it will probably be clear and chilly with highs in the 50s.

I will be posting up a proposed intenerary over the weekend.
