View Full Version : Question about Garand welds

I purchased an M1 Garand a few years ago and after shooting a few rounds through it I put it in my safe and never shot it again. I was going to take it to the range last week and noticed there were a few blemishes around the serial number. I took it to the range and asked a guy who is pretty knowledgeable about Garands what he thought those blemishes might be. He broke the gun down and showed me that there were blemish marks on both sides of the receiver in line with the ones on the serial number. He said these were weld marks and that the gun had been welded at some time in it's past. He said if the bolt were to come back and hit the area where the welds were it could be very dangerous. Anybody know anything about something like this? Thanks for any help.

Yes some unscrupulous people have assembled rifles from receivers that were cut by the govt. Here is a link to some info on finding and identifying them.

Hope that helps.

by the way your best bet for more responses would be in the rifleman's section
