If it had a setting to take it from Stun to kill I would buy one also :43:

What you guys are missing is that it is a LOT more than just a light and 'laser'. For the technology, and the package, I'd say it commands a hefty price. Now $2k+ I don't know about that, but it's still no garden variety aiming laser.

naw.. it's a metal cutting laser, to escape a jail cell, and a laser target designator to "paint" the target for incoming JDAMS.

And you can see the light from the moon.

This laser can kill without actual gun! Just aim at the eye for a very long time.

This is not the same one. Look at the picture of the commercially available one at Amazon and FunDeals4U as listed here and also the part numbers. Not the same.

The one above at the factory website indeed does IR laser as well as visible and all sorts of nifty things. The one at Amazon etc probably does not have IR laser -- they appear to be missing.

I was also told that while it is not illegal for a civilian to own an IR laser, it is against the law to sell IR lasers to civilians. I don't know if this is true or not but I have been told that by several different people (manufacturers).

I did notice the picture from Amazon lacked the infrared. I presume the Insight device is the same as Amazon is selling and will also presume the picture is not accurate from Amazon. Infrared lasers are to my knowledge legal for purchase and use. However, it is illegal to export them.

People will buy them because they're tacticool and because they cost that much.

Think of it this way, anyone who would buy one of these laser/light combos has already spent:

2k+ on a set of decent NVGs.
1-2k+ on a pistol and upgrades.
and probably another 1k on a silencer and taxes.

Capitalism 101: charge what the market will bare, even if it is stupidly overpriced....

A review I read in a specialty magazine, I don't remember which one, claims that it is illegal to sell the IR lasers on the civilian market, but not illegal to own one as a civilian. I have been told this as well by two different vendors I use who also make such things. I do not know if it really is true or not and cannot quote a statute.

Both he amazon and fundeals4u site had the same pic which was different than the insight website picture and also a different part number.

I am not an export in IR

Ridiculous. Every electronics manufacturer in the world would be arrested. DVD and CD players have IR lasers.

However, attaching one to a firearm could conceivably be a part of a statute somewhere. I would guess you could run afoul of the "Sniper Scopes" stuff here in CA.
