View Full Version : Should I do with the original PU for a Mosin Sniper? or a replica?

Hey all,

I just bought a M91/30 in fabulous condition at the cal expo show last weekend. I picked it up for $100 out the door :D. I'm planning to build a mosin sniper replica out of it. I've found a guy that offers a turned bolt modification service on ebay for $40. His work looks pretty snazzy too!

I'm going to go with the no-sweep bent bolt mod.

....To the main point. I have two questions. Will the PU optic mount fit all mosin receivers? (Round or hex) I can't really remember which type of receiver mine has since I can't pick it up yet. lol.

Secondly, should I go with a PU complete replica set-up? or an original? They both cost nearly the same (at least from what i've spotted). Will they perform equally?

Here is what i've found:

The replica, supposedly as good as the other and genuinely russian built.

Here is the real deal (At least I hope so! They advertise it as such) I don't really know what the original ones looked like if this is not original.

Hey all,

Here is the real deal (At least I hope so! They advertise it as such) I don't really know what the original ones looked like if this is not original.

First off let me congratulate you on your first Mosin purchase. Just be aware that Mosins tend to multiply like rabbits. The only suggestion that I can offer you concerning a replica sniper build is to think long and hard about it. In all honesty, it is not cheap. Furthermore, I would advise you to stay away from Kalinka Optics unless you want a fake PU setup. They do not sell an authentic WWII PU package. If you want to do some more homework and research I would suggest checking out gunboards.com and mosinnagant.net. I hope this helps.

DO not proceed- the only guy to get the scope from is named "goandshoot" or "goshoot" or something like that- he sells on EBAY. There are chinese replicas,
russian replicas, and
russian original.
That 185.00 scope is chinese- they are crap. The base is rough cast, and the turret/BDC is NOT marked correctly. The "OEM means vintage, old day MFG in russia. The new ones from russia are considered replicas. Duh.

The russian scope is really nice. Brushed and blued over heat treated steel, so it takes the original plumb brown finish. And the BDC is spot on out ot 600 meters- I'm sure it's better, but I've only tried mine at 600.

I have done many of these... the mounting is easy to screw up.

Can somebody provide me with a way/link to find an authentic PU? I'll look into that one ebay seller.

On a side note, I'm going to have a gunsmith do the mounting.

I would post on Parallax Bill Mosin forum : http://parallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforums.yuku.com/forums/69/t/Mosin-Nagant-Forum.html

and just ask for a good source for a PU scope.

I now have conflicting reports. Are the russian reproductions good or not? ANY WHY!!!!!!??? I've been posting on multiple forums and I've been getting opinions and assertions w/no back up.

I cannot find the goandshoot seller on ebay, to the guy that posted that.

I have found only one source of a genuine original. Its $400 with the mount and I'm more than happy to drop the cash if this is the best way to go.

Its kind of wierd that the scope would cost as much as 4 mosins. lol. :D

I cant offer any advice of the scope but here is a good read if you havent seen it.

I'm interested in advice on Mosin Scopes also. I'm not opposed to purchasing a replica. I seem to remember somewhere that the Ukraine made nice replicas.

The OEM, WWII era, PU scopes suck!

Make sure that you get a Russian made, current production model.

Make sure it is NOT CHINESE!

I'vr owned more than afew of these. Learn from my mistakes- no WWII, no chinese.

Maybe I'm not communicating this well- there exists a PU sniper scope, copies of the war era, but BETTER. Made, today, in a modern factory, in the former soviet republic. This is the one you want. Get on Ebay- look for a seller named goandshoot.

Can you confirm the name of the ebay guy for me??? I just can't seem to find the guy, even through auctions.

Here are some mosin sniper build links

Thanks for those links man!!!!!!!!!! I just bought the POSP mount for mosin rifles that the guy listed in those articles. I bought it on ebay for a snazzy $40.

I'll get a mosin sniper replica thats fully built at another time. That way I don't have to go ape over parts and gunsmithing.

This POSP thing sounts pretty damn awesome!!

Wow, that POSP looks out of place on that MN.

I'd go with a current production PO like CRTGuns suggested.

I think I liked to this in one of your post already:
