how loud is a .223 compared to 9mm ammo?

It is much louder. The sound with a 9mm is more of a "pop" and the 223 has a deeper bang.

Well...the .223 has more powder - and therefore more gas and pressure upon burning - which ought to translate to an increase in loudness. But IME it has a lot to do with the length and type - e.g., braked or not - of the barrel of the firearm.

And certainly it matters whether one is shooting indoors or outdoors and, if the latter, what is around to bounce the pressure wave back to you.

Personally, I almost always wear ear protection. But on those rare occasions when I've gone without, I've found that I can detect the difference between a .22lr fired from a rifle/carbine vs. a handgun. FWIW.

In general, the volume of a shot is determined by the pressure at the muzzle and then aided by the volume of gas at that pressure in the barrel.

9mm has MUCH lower muzzle pressure than 223.

First link is a 9mm second is 223

2nd video is shot under a roof which changes the perceived blast.
It's also in a different area and posted by a different user so we can assume a different camera as well.

The only way a youtube video is any good is if it's both guns in the same place with the same camera, perferrably one after another in the same video clip.

9mm is not that bad on muzzle blast, but stick your 9mm in a plastic barrel and shoot it and it's really annoying.
Shoot a few matches and you will run into this situation.
