Is there really such a thing as a hazmat fee to buy ammo online/mail in sacramento? Or is my local store worried of losing business?
I went into cordova guns and picked up some ak ammo. On my way out I asked if it was legal to buy ammo online or through the mail in Fair Oaks (Sac county) and they said it is legal but its not worth it because "they'll rape you with the hazmat fees."
Just curious. :D

I've never heard of any such fee and even with shipping charges it always ends up cheaper to buy it direct.

No hazmat on loaded ammo! If you order primers, primer brass and/or powder you will pay hazmat!

lol, I figured they were giving me a line. They are very good liars there. I tried to sell my pinned-mag carbon 15 there and they refused to buy it because "It has a bayonet lug and that makes it an assault weapon." I promptly pointed to their C-15 on the way and said "Yours has a bayonet lug too, are you selling illegal weaponry?"

I've ordered plenty of ammo to Fair Oaks and never had a "hazmat fee" :)

Sounds like they should pay you a hazmat fee for feeding you :icon_bs:

There is no hazmat fee for ammo, but there is for powder and primers.

There is not a hazmat fee, but there is one for lying to a customer.

There is no hazmat fee for ammunition that is already assembled. Sac CITY has that ammo ordinance, but it won't apply to you. They're just trying to get you to buy ammo from them. Occasionally, it's worth the slight extra amount to buy local vs online. I happen to just live in a zipcode that includes the City of Sacramento, but I live very firmly in Unincorporated County land. Most shippers won't ship to me because their ship programs look only at zipcode, not the actual address. I am still looking for an online supplier to ship to me...

Could be that the guy just misunderstands how the fees are applied.

Indeed, more times then not I find it to be misinformed/uneducated individuals giving bad information rather then lying. :)

How does it go? Something like "Never attribute to malace what can be attributed to ignorance."

They do know what items they pay Hazmat fees on and what items they don't.

Even though small arms ammunition is considered a hazardous material by DOT, there is usually no HAZMAT fee for shipping quantities of 66 pounds or less which would be reclassed as ORM-D. Shipments of greater than 66 pounds in one package would be classed as a Division 1.4S explosive material and would have a HAZMAT fee.
The HAZMAT fee is assessed primarily because of the extra paperwork and certifications required for preparation of shipping papers and special marking and labeling of the packages. ORM-D materials are exempted from most of those requirements.
